Re: STJ (Over or Under) Reactions - June 2014

The film crews were/are in all cases based on the Gibney family property, not the deed- restricted Oppenheimer lot. At the time The Four Seasons was filmed, there wasn't yet public access through Oppenheimer.

Re: Boat in Maho

Just for everyone's information, law enforcement rangers, as opposed to interpretive rangers, are federal agents, charged with upholding federal and local laws and regulations within the park. They are reported to suffer the highest level of assaults of any Federal law enforcement officers, probably ...

Re: Last Trail Bandit

Exit, you have always been a voice for conservation and preservation here, so I'm surprised to see you supporting a group of libertarians from away who think they should have the right to exploit and destroy National Park resources.

Re: Boat in Maho

Unfortunately, the VI National Park is among the most under-funded in the Park system, and is operating with about half the staff they were budgeted for in the past. Federal cuts do not allow replacement of rangers who leave, so enforcement of regulations is less consistent than it should be. A segm...

Re: 1961 USVI slide collection

Tourism replaced agriculture as the primary economic activity over a longish period: between 1950 and and 1980 for St John, and between 1970 and 1995 for Jost van Dyke.
Between 1920 and 1950, there were about an equal number of cows and people in the USVI.

Re: 1990 STJ video

Thanks for posting, Exit. I really enjoyed this. Many wonderful people, some of them now passed on--and it seems suddenly so long ago and somehow simple and innocent, although at the time some already had written off the island as ruined. So much is relative.

Re: Where was this photo taken....?

Mizarumonkey, there are certainly two ways you could use the term "St Johnian" or "Virgin Islander". Yes, you could loosely call anyone who has lived here full-time for several years a "St Johnian", but that would leave us with no term for the people with generations of...

Re: Where was this photo taken....?

Looking again, I notice it was taken from farther back than I'd thought, from Haulover hill, because the point in the foreground is where Pebble Cove is now. There has been more change than is apparent in this picture. In 1972 the East End community was still St Johnian. These were people whose famil...

East End--from just before Vie's beach, looking at the EE school. That is the road in the right foreground.

Re: Date for Wagapalooza 2014?

Nothing's been announced that I know of, but....it has been consistently on the third weekend in May for the past several years. So Saturday, May 17th would be the best-guess date.

Re: Calmest wave action

Late April to late July is pretty much guaranteed to be wave-free on the north shore. Late July to mid-October will also be calm except if a tropical storm is passing on the north--not that common, and usually a much briefer rough period than the winter storm waves.

Re: Caneel Public Beach - Public Unwelcome

The other factor worth pointing out is the tremendous increase in the number of people using the North Shore beaches in the past 15 years, since the number of rental villas has at least tripled.

Re: Caneel Public Beach - Public Unwelcome

Betty is totally right. Caneel probably has never made very much money; although before 1986, under Rockefeller ownership, it didn't have to. The big looming elephant in the room now is the switch from the retained estate scenario to a lease from the NPS. Although Congress has approved this in theor...

Re: passenger ferry rate increase

There are several US mainland/ island ferry systems that accomplish the same thing through differences in fare depending on whether you purchase your round trip on the mainland (higher price) or the island (several dollars lower). Most tourists never realize that they are paying more than island res...
