Re: Maho Bay sold December 27th

The quality of the sourcing on the "wealthy individual with a strong interest in preservation" rumor previously posted just went up several notches: "Lynda Lohr of the St. John Source contacted the Campgrounds' owner, Stanley Selengut, who professed not to know much other than to say,...

Re: Maho Bay sold December 27th

This may be little more than wishful thinking, but over on the Trip Advisor St. John forum, "Melia4", who lives in the VI, writes: "Rumor has the purchaser a wealthy individual with a strong interest in preservation". http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g147409-i432-k5996016-Mah...

Sure, no rush, Amy. Let's see how things develop over the next week. It might need a bump now and then.

All the best,

Re: Maho Bay sold December 27th

Wow...I can only hope that the new owners have much lower impact intentions than the think tank that wanted to go nuts there a few years ago...

All the best,

Re: 3D map of St. John

Happy New Year! I thought about the logistics of casting some replicas of my 3D map of St. John. Making one would be pricey, since I would need to buy a gallon kit of the two-part, aluminum-filled casting epoxy. If more people were interested, each would be cheaper. A gallon would make ten 3D maps; ...

3D map of St. John

We keep a variety of aerial photos, maps, and nautical charts at Coconuts, both for our own use, and to help guests better get a sense of this extraordinary island. Earlier this year, I decided to try and make a 3D relief map of St. John. A colleague on a joint project at Harvard had just taken deli...

Re: Forum meeting at beach bar in Jan?

I (maybe we) would be happy to swing by. We're on island from the 12th to the 24th. I thought about taking a Simonsen workshop, but would probably want to take his Beyond the Basics.

Re: Need suggestions for time frame 10-2 with friend from cr

Does her cruise ship provide direct transportation to St. John? If not, your schedule could be compressed; grab n go fried chicken at Joe's Diner maybe, and then Hawksnest or the trail to Salomon. We had relatives whose cruise ship stopped in St. Thomas last year; they had planned to visit St. John,...

Re: Merry Christmas

With half an hour's notice on Christmas Eve, some neighbors invited us to join them caroling down in Cruz Bay. We started out at Mongoose Junction, and proceeded on to Morgan's Mango, the bandstand in the park, the ferry dock as new visitors arrived, High Tide (where a guitar accompanied us), the Ba...

Re: North Shore swell conditions

Trunk was pretty mellow on Friday, but the swells rolled in on Saturday, and made for some lively surf. This should break tomorrow (Monday). When there is heavy surf, it is still calm as soon as you get out past the shore break. Pay attention entering and exiting, though; I saw some people bowled ov...

Re: The mosquito bloom has abated

Lisa: Vieques is 45 miles away, but being on a hill and having the clearer days of winter (no Sahara dust) help. The other large Spanish Virgin, Culebra (35 miles away) can be seen in the notch between two hills on St. Thomas. The other day, we could even see the slopes of El Yunque on Puerto Rico, ...

Friday's St. John Singers concert at the Moravian Church is at 7:30 PM, and it's really wonderful, so do try and make it!

The mosquito bloom has abated

The mosquito bloom reported a few weeks back seems to have abated; up here on Gifft Hill there is a nice breeze, with no mosquitoes; Cruz Bay was fine as well. I did see a few in the great room, and will spray for these. Beach check shortly. Rollicking great music last night at Sun Dog's open mic sh...
