Stayed at Vistaero in May 09. Great view and very large spaces for a big group (deck, pool, common rooms).

thanks for all the tips! We're actually in port on STT from 8am-5pm, I'm figuring that we'll only be on STJ from 9am-2pm.

Taxis are cheaper than I thought! Thanks to everyone who responded. The board is great.

Wow - dinghy is too adventurous for us! Thanks for the thought though. Kids would love it until someone bounces out! Anyone have any idea on taxi rates per person to & from Trunk & Cinnamon?

Forgot to add that you can comparison shop for the right coverage at the best price. Just google "travel insurance" and you'll get some comparison sites. It also makes a difference if you travel with kids - some companies don't charge anything for kids, others do, so it's worth it to go th...

Every insurance company is a little different, so you should call each one to ask them when you need to insure, and whether you can change the amount at a later date. For example, Costco insurance through TravelGuard covers you for pre-existing conditions if you buy the insurance within 24 or 48 hou...

Thanks for the encouragement Toni. We're pretty excited about the cruise - we'll get to see a lot more islands that going to STJ for the whole week. Also, you're right about the costs, the cruise for a family of 4 is less than the weekly rental for a (small) villa. Plus we're going with a multi-gene...

I've rented from Conrad Sutton each time and been pleased. Cars were newer, in good shape, and you can park in his lot in Cruz Bay in the evenings. I've also rented with Cool Breeze. No experience with the others on your list.

On a cruise - take a taxi vs. rental car for a day

We are crossing to the dark side and just booked a caribbean cruise! I've never been on a cruise before, so looking forward to it, but still want to make it to St. John during the stop in St. Thomas. I've been to STJ several times before but always was staying on island for a week so had our own car...

Thanks for all the great info. Went to Gallows on my honeymoon in 1999 and oh boy do I wish I'd bought one of those really expensive $240K units back then! :)

Liamsaunt did a comprehensive review of Colibri, it looked beautiful. One thing to consider is that Colibri is out on Maria Bluff, right on the water, whereas Allesandra is up on the hill overlooking Chocolate Hole. Both look like they've got great views, but from different perspectives.

If you think that your group may want to go out for drinks in Cruz bay without having to drive home, I'd stay over in Chocolate Hole, so that it's easier to find taxis in and out of Cruz Bay. Maria Bluff area is very nice and might be good since you can walk to the Westin from that area. Lots of cho...

Flights for early Nov. are down to $59 each way out of DC. Plus taxes, it's about $204 per person r/t. I've never seen it that low. Thinking about reshuffling my vacation plans...........

Just got an alert that Spirit is down to $230 r/t for air from DC to STT in Sept, Oct, Nov. That's pretty cheap!! Won't work for my schedule, but I wanted to pass it on.

Glad to see Miles Away will still be on the rental market! It's on my short list, but after hearing that it's booked for 2012, I was thinking that perhaps it was sold and being taken off the market. Very glad you piped up!
