High Tide 02/22/2009
Reviewers Rating: Great
We ate here 2x. The location is top notch- a large deck overlooking the ferry dock where you can watch all the comings and goings. My sister met us at Red Hook and took the ride over to STJ with us. She had been to High Tide on quite a few occasions with crew members and suggested we grab a light dinner there. The food and service were both great. On the first night, we had margaritas (yummy with quite a kick). We wanted to try the conch chowder and fritters so we shared one order of each. The chowder was like a New England clam chowder with a cream base. I had never had that particular preparation but it was very good. The conch fritters were decent. I’m not a fan of fried foods so I’m not a very good judge but they were very tasty with a lot of conch in the batter. My husband and I both ordered the blackened mahi which came with a mango chutney and pineapple salsa over rice. It was very fresh and tasty. The blackened fish was perfectly crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. My sister got the lobster which was grilled and had the same mango chutney as a glaze. She said hers was good as well. The kids had chicken parmagiana and seafood fradiavlo. The fra diavlo was full of shrimp, calamari and lobster. I didn’t try either but both boys inhaled the huge portions and said it was “awesome”. The second night we ended up there by chance. My sister had to get the ferry back to Red Hook so we stopped in for drinks and a quick bite. It was still lunch time so we ordered sandwiches and cocktails. I tried the lime n coconut – heaven in a glass. For sandwiches we had burgers, chicken Caesar wrap, mahi sandwich and chicken parm sandwich. All the lunches come with pasta salad or you can get fries for an extra $2. All the sandwiches were delicious. The burgers were enormous and very fresh tasting. The pasta salad was one of the best I’ve ever had made of tri color rotini with fresh red and green peppers, carrots, capers and parmesan cheese. I could have had that as my meal. The kids and my sister ordered the fries which were truly worth the extra $2. Prices were extremely reasonable- I’d even say cheap. Dinner entrees were $17-$28 and sandwiches $10-$13. Portions were very generous.
This is a great spot for people watching and a casual meal or cocktails.
