Margarita Phil's 02/12/2007

In the interest of full disclosure;
I am not a plant, nor was I paid by Polli's to submit this review:)
We went to Margarita Phil's with no great expectations. We were just looking forward to a few cold Coronas, some quasi Mexican food and maybe even that elusive lobster taco which had never been available on previous visits.
I'm sorry to report that we were sorely disappointed with our meals.
I won't go into a bite by bite of what we had, only a few observations from our experience.
The nacho appetizer was stale, didn't have the same ingredients as the previous times and looked like everything had been thrown on the plate by a child.
The "made fresh daily" chalupas tasted like cardboard and were anything but "fresh".
The crew was debating on whether they should close early or wait for their last reservation to arrive.
I could elaborate, but simply suffice to say, it wasn't good.
When the waitress gave my husband the check, I asked, "Are you under new management?" To which she quickly responded, "No, same manager." I persisted, "New chef?" She hesitated, I pressed on, "Is Phil still cooking here?" At this point she revealed that Phil hadn't been there for 4 months, he is working exclusively at his restaurant in St. Thomas. AHA! We now had an explanation for the obvious changes. I thanked the waitress for answering my questions and of course tipped her the customary 20+% for her service.
I was reluctant about writing a negative review. After all, we were on St. John, so who cares about one bad meal? I honestly don't care. And the other restaurants we went to were all very good. I decided to go ahead with it because I wish we had known about the new arrangement at Margarita Phil's. Then we could have chosen another restaurant, if we had wished to do so.
