Salt Pond Bay

This beach is on the south side of the island in the Coral Bay section, and has superb white sand. If you are driving from Cruz Bay, take Centerline Road, which starts at the traffic circle. The road will take you through the central interior of St. John to Coral Bay.

For the beach at Salt Pond you park at the National Park trail head. The beach is about a ten minute downhill walk from the parking area. This can be a tough walk back to the parking lot if you take it on during the middle of the day when the sun is at its highest intensity. There is little shade on the beach, but the water is almost always very calm. The snorkeling directly in front of the beach is limited, but it is peaceful. To the left side facing the water there are more rocks, coral, and sea life. A couple of hundred yards straight out there are large corals, and you also have a good chance to see turtles and rays here. With this beach in particular, don't leave anything of value on your beach blanket when you go into the water as there have been reports of theft.

From Salt Pond Bay, you can hike the Ram Head trail which will allows you to view other nearby islands from the 200 foot cliff. Be prepared on this hike with some water and sunscreen - and a cell phone isn't a bad idea, especially if you are alone. It can be deserted out there if you were to fall or injure yourself and need assistance in any way.

This is one of my favorite beaches on the whole island, I think the snorkeling is great here - but you have to swim a little to get to the good stuff. Also usually a good spot to find turtles, especially if coming into the beach on a boat.
