Anyone been?

We're kinda planning a trip down to FLA in April. We want to go see my wife's father. His health is going down hill and we want to get there with the kid while he's still up and about.

At the same time, we're not sure anyone would be able to handle a full week there. Him and his wife from the standpoint of having us there, us from having to live among the retirees for a full week (Dinner at 1:30PM? Sure!)

So, I'm peering towards Cedar Key as a place to go for 3-4 nights. Anyone ever been? It doesn't look like there's much to do other than toss a fishing pole in the water, walk around some nature parks and eat fried seafood. Sounds good if you ask me.

Your right about “Not much to do” on Cedar Key. It’s an art’sy town, so if you hit it during an art show – there is more to do. You can really see the whole key in one day. But, if you want to sit on the balcony with a cocktail and relax and watch the sun go down over the water – this is the place. Ole Florida at it’s best.

Where does your wife’s dad live – maybe I could suggest other places.

Father in law lives in Crystal River. So, we're somewhat familiar with that neck of the woods. We don't want to any farther south before we start the drive home.

What we're looking for is a quiet place to go unwind for a few days after the visit. With her father ailing, I don't think the visit will be relaxing in any way and we'd like our daughter to go have some fun on her spring break. Since she aspires to be a pirate who plays football, it seemed like a good place.

One of the cottage places we found offers guests bikes, kayaks, canoes, etc. That's really all we're looking for.

And, I want to see a real Gulf sunset. I just read Duma Key (Stephen King) and as long as fish-vampire monsters don't come get me, I'll be pleased.
