FYI. On AOL's Home Page today (Sun, Dec 7), one of the feature stories "Budget Beach Vacations" mentions St John as the second beach destination in the series.

St. John? Budget? Sounds like an oxymoron to me!

CG, You took those words right out of my mouth. Try as we might, STJ just isn't a budget spot. Just start with villa, airfare and car and you are already up there.

I guess is depends on your definition of "budget destination" and the amount of "luxury" you require. I can find a decent villa for $100 per night per person. I consider that budget. For me it's the airfare and the cost of eating that can bloat the budget. I would rather see the airfare drop and the villa prices rise so that people on island would get my vacation $$$ instead of American Airlines.

Well, I couldn't decide if it was good or bad news, either, and I live in the VI. Everybody on STT is very nervous about this season, and so far, it's been extremely dead, and a few stores closed this summer already. They're having trouble getting merchants to participate in the annual Miracle on Main Street, because the stores can't afford to stay open past 5, and most of the stores have cut employee hours.

But when I was on STJ last weekend at Lameshur(sp) Bay, quite a few jeeps were coming onto that secluded road/beach. Then when I passed Cinnamon later that day, I don't think there was one free parking space. So the beaches were definitely getting their share of tourists.

AOL recommended what sounds like the campgrounds at Cinnamon or Maho ($70/night), but the shops and eateries they mentioned are in Coral Bay, I think (they didn't give names - just descriptions).

The problem with putting a destination in the budget category gives people the impression that everything is cheap, and as we all know, food and transportation in the VI are not cheap. People end up budgeting too little for their vacation, and come away disappointed, I think (unless they're smart like the people on VIOL :) ).

This economy will test the best of us everywhere, but hopefully the US (and the VI) will emerge smarter, stronger, more environmentally conscious, and more respectful of diverse opinions.
