Gear question:

We are staying on the Coral side this time. I believe we can get gear at Crabby's and wanting to know if it is quality gear, if they take the time to properly fit us, and to double check that they quit renting dingy's.

What I would like it:

flippers
snorkeling vest

maybe masks (last years may not fit due to our kids growing)

anything else?? Should I call in advance? Anyone know what it will cost?

Other than the mask I would prefer not having to pack all of that. It gets heavy and takes a lot of valuable space.

TIA

Gina

We have rented only fins from Crabbys and they were fine. Not sure about the rest of the gear. I don't remember seeing any dinghies last winter when we stayed in Coral Bay and I had heard on this forum that he was no longer renting them. Sorry I don't seem to be much help.

Not sure how current this is, but here's a link with phone and email contacts.

I also have rented only fins from Crabby, and they were fine. I had a problem with my mask (that I brought with me) leaking, and he helped me adjust it better. I rented a beach umbrella also, and it was fine. His shop was at the foot of the driveway to the villa that I stayed in, and I stopped about every other morning asking him questions (directions and such). He was very helpful and friendly.

We've done well with Crabby's. They no longer rent dinghies due to the spiraling cost of liability insurance.

Crabbys is awesome. Last trip my mask died--it really made me mad because I had only had it for a couple of years. It was not an adjustment issue, the seal just died. I went to Crabbys and they put out a bunch of masks for me to try. They also said if I snorkeled with the mask I bought and it did not work for me I could bring it back for an exchange. They have lots of different sizes.

No dinghys out of Coral Bay anymore. Crabbys still rents kayaks though, if you like to kayak (too much work for me on vacation!)

Thank you! I think that is exactly what I will do--rent the fins and probably the vests. The fins take up so much room but they really help. Especially if we see a shark like some have--I know there haven't been any attacks in the USVI for a long time but I would have the same reaction to a shark as I would a little gardner snack. Panic, scream, and bolt!!
