Camping at Hansen Bay (Vie's)

Anyone done this? What's it like? (Maho and Cinnamon are booked)

We've never been to the Caribbean, let alone St. John's. I just want to camp on the beach with a bottle of rum and my wife by my side and relax in late December away from Illinois.

But after reading, I'm concerned about:
1) keeping cool enough to sleep at night
2) keeping the bugs at bay (mosquitoes and no-see ums)
3) facility conditions (is the site clean, water good for swimming, solar showers adequate, toilets tolerable, etc)

Any tips/thoughts are greatly appreciated!

There are no facilities at all at Vie's. It is a beach, that is it. I am not even sure that people actually camp there at all. (I very well may be wrong)

It has been a while since I have been there, so maybe things have changed.

I understand I'm behind the 8 ball trying to schedule in late December as I have tried a number of villas and other lodging arrangements on St John and elsewhere(and I can still get an SUV via St Thomas)

Just want to make sure if I camp, it's not going to be a miserable, regrettable experience. We're no strangers to camping in the continental US, but having a clean john, decent sleep and not getting ate up by bugs are keys to a good camping experience. That's where my questions lie.

I really love the East End of STJ. The facilities at Vie's are very primitive. It's really basic camping. Some folks would be happy as can be there, other people would be absolutely miserable. Here's a video which starts out with a brief tour of Vie's, which should give you some idea of what to expect:

As far as weather, December is a cooler season on STJ, but you will be in the tropics, so it could feel warm to you. Most residents will be finding it a little chilly. It is the tropics, so there will be bugs, probably not too many. Bring insect repellent and be sure your tent is tight.

There's no public transportation to the East End, so you will need to rent a vehicle if you stay over there.

Great! Thanks!

You might try the Water Island campground - it is quiet and secluded and not primitive. You wouldn't need to rent a car and although it is not St John it is a very unique Virgin Island. It may well fit your needs. PHONE -- 877-502 7225

what about camping on Jost? White bay campground and Ivan's (I think)...... we have stayed in the cottage on Cinnamon twice and it was ok...but we are not huge campers and have small children. I need facilities!

look into Jost.....Oh, we also stayed on water island when our first child was an infant and ad a great time.......

I don't know if VIERS (Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station) by Lameshur rents to individuals or just small groups but it's worth a check. Maybe one of the on-island people would know better...
