A lot of us have trips planned for 2008/2009 and I was wondering if any of you have actually purchased travel insurance and if so, do you believe it was a worth while investment?

Always, especially since we tend to go to the Caribbean during hurricane season. The money spent is well worth the peace of mind.

I bought it through <a href="http://www.csatravelprotection.com/?aff ... CSA</b></a> at this site and yes I always like to have it for any trip. I had to cash in one time and I was glad to have it then.
Not sure what a trip in 2008/2009 has to do with it though. What do you mean?

Greetings fellow Virginian!!

In answer to your questions .. yes and yes.

<a href="http://www.csatravelprotection.com/?aff ... CSA</b></a> Insurance sold thru (via a link) this web site is great and I've heard nothing but great things about them.

Certainly you have to consider when you are traveling and what your personal circumstances are but these days when you're dropping a few tousand on your hard earned vacation an extra $100 or so just makes sense in case something goes wrong.

I will say this. I had only gotten insurance (through the airline) on my trip because of where we had to change villas a month before the trip. (The villa agent had just sent me the insurance info for <a href="http://www.csatravelprotection.com/?aff ... CSA</b></a> right before the hurricane and I hadn't gotten around to calling them yet.)

Hurricane Omar scared me more than it usually would (meaning that I normally would just be scared for my friends who are on island) because I knew if it was a direct hit on STJ, I was going to lose the money we'd put in for the house and car.

I think as with any insurance you have to ask yourself if the peace of mind is worth the extra expense. For me, it was.

I got insurance for our trip last year, but since we are splitting the costs of our trip next year, I wouldn't really know how to get insurance for that. I'm not worried about it, but I do think it's a good idea in the long run.

Our close friend and travelling companion is also in the insurance business. He likes CSA and needed to file a claim in the past. He said it was an easy process and the claim was paid promptly.

We have taken long trips with and without insurance.

For me, the cost of the trip plays into my decision. Last year, we had four adults and a child in our family (we paid the grandparent's wasy). Our share of the villa was $$$ as were the plane tickets.

When it was just Hubs and I and the potential lost money was a smaller amount, we didn't buy insurance.

Didn't someone say that they were in a car accident on island and CSA paid for all the damage to the rental jeep. My car insurance will cover everything on our Jeep, but something to think about it if yours doesn't -- another benefit. (And you'd have savings to not have to pay that damage waiver -- it'd probably cover the premium.)

A lot of coverage depends on the timing on getting your insurance. I know that if I bought my insurance within the first 30 days (I think) of making my first reservation - be it hotel, car, air, whatever - it covered just about EVERYTHING, including if I had an accident before my trip that would prevent me from going. And it also covered being helicoptered out of the VI to another hospital if needed. I can't remember all the details now, but it was all based on getting it bought within that specific time frame. The longer you wait, the less it will cover sometimes.
