for your last night on island .....
do you usually eat in and soak up the last few hours of your villa time
Or save the last night for your fancy dinner out.
We always go out because we are usually out of food-we don't plan ahead or bring coolers. We always eat at stone terrace on our last night, which I guess will change to hinds place now.
I thought it would be a good time to have a chef come also. Just obsessing over trip and loving every minute of it. I know a few of you do the same.

Well, I like to make a late night of it and hit all of the watering holes for some tunes. One year we stayed at the Front Yard very late while one of our favorite bands played.

We usually go out to a casual place our last night and generally drink too much of the island beverages we can't get at home.

Out, out, out.
In 10 trips to STJ, I have never eaten a dinner at the villa. I love to eat out. THAT is vacation to me. While I love to cook, I don't enjoy eating my own food. I'm weird that way. I would rather have a fried bologna sandwich someone else made me than a filet mignon that I made myself. Go figure. However, I don't really reserve the last night for somewhere special. When we eat where is generally dictated more by "specials" nights (e.g., Grand Buffet at Caneel on Monday, lobster night at Morgan's Mango on Tuesday, Lime Inn all you can eat shrimp on Wednesday, etc.) or by when places are closed.

as many of you know bride and i are ss receps and she started medicare in sept (quiet a raise for us since i was always self employed and had indiv med insurance with outlandish premiums), we are a little more conservative on our evening activities. afraid if we wandered out on last night, we might not find our way home before checkout time.
we enjoy sunsets, so villa's we use offer. our last night tradition is "eating and drinking what's left" and a final toast to the view and the place we love. then the fight begins as to why did we bring so much crap that won't fit into our suitcases.

So far we've had all of one trip, so while we can't call what we did our last night a "tradition" just yet, at least I can remember what it was...
Our Walk of Woe day last year was on a Monday, so we spent our last evening at the Beach Bar hoping for a mini-gathering of forum folk. Alas, that didn't happen, but we really enjoyed the jazz, the sunset, the bar food, the drinks, and the servers.
I was kind of chicken about driving the roads at night, but like most unknown things, it wasn't as bad as I'd expected.
Since we're staying out Coral Bay way this time around, I'll be night driving after the mega-gathering on the 2nd, which will be early in our trip, so I suppose I'll be much more willing to do that this time around.
Our last night will once again be on a Sunday - November 9th, so we'll likely hit the Beach Bar for a little while, then drive "home" in time to soak in the Coral Bay serenity one last time...

vicki,
when we were younger, bride and i had same feelings. dining out, whether at home or on vacation, was a neccesity, she from the tedium of homemaker/mother, me from 70+ hr workweeks and a lot of 6 day work weeks. bride still says "my favorite meals are the ones someone else prepared". we still dine out regularly at home and every other vacation involves all meals out. she loves club med!
to us stj is about the beaches and the villa views and absolute relaxation. to share the duties of evening meals on the deck at the villa, i've learned to grill and help in the kitchen.
moral, you can teach an old dog new tricks.

I'm with Vicky, we eat out...too many great places...we don't have a tradition just get dinner and drinks...its very quiet when we get back to the villa...everyone getting their things packed up for the long trip home...its depressing knowing its our last night in St John...sad really...

Last year, our last day we didn't make it back to the villa until very late at night.
We hit the beach, then lunch at Skinny's, and then Maho on the way home. We stopped at Happy Hour, stumbled over to dinner at Margarita Phil's and then went to the Beach Bar for that last round of Lime & Coconuts.
When we got back to the villa, we packed and went to sleep.
I don't know if that will be an annual tradition. I like cooking, and I'll always cook when there is a great view. So, it'll depend on if there is anything else we want to do.
Soup anyone?

Eat whatever is left from the week and polish off the remaining beer/alcohol. Usually not a lot of food left, but last year I was glad we had an afternoon flight out. Had a bit more alcohol remaining than we thought we would. We plan to resolve that this year by starting to drink earlier each day

We like to stay in the last night. Eat and drink up everything we have left. Spend one last night enjoying the view and a dip in the pool. Pack the bags and off to bed. We usually have an early flight out.
It is a mix of emotions. I dread leaving but I can't wait to get home to our son and the pets.

I'm with the people who stay in and eat/drink everything that's left in the villa.
While on island, we make it a point to only eat out for 1 dinner and 1 lunch. We figure, we're already splurging on a vacation in a beautiful villa in paradise.. food is just one of those things we try to keep simple and easy. In other words, we just can't afford it! So we bring a lot of provisions from home and then buy fresh stuff at Starfish. I have never felt like I was missing out.

Depends-
If we're out of food in the fridge - then we go out.
Often times tho', because of poor planning it is a "last night pig-out" and we cook up everything left.
Usually it is quite the smorgasbord.
