That's a bummer

Not only for humans
but the poor fishies/coral living in it.
Unfortunately on the Gulf side of FLA this Summer we
had probs with that kind of "bad" water too.
This is when a pool is absolutely necessary.

I feel so bad for everyone on vacation right now. I agree - a pool is a must this time around.
After heavy rainfalls here in WI this summer, we too, had the same warnings about our local lakes. They were desolate.

How awful!
There are probably people on their way down right now who have no idea that their hols are spoilt.
I don't even recall this being talked about in 2003 after that 2-straight-weeks of rain.
Do keep us posted.
Thanks.

Wow, this happens all the time in So. Cal., but how sad it's affecting the islands that way! At least is't something that will eventually correct itself.

The water ought to recover in another 2-3 days, especially on beaches with strong water movement. The quantity of run-off is much greater than in some other periods of high cumulative rainfall, due to the intensity of the Omar rains. We had 2.75 inches in 45 minutes at Wednesday lunchtime, for instance. This caused far more run-off and erosion than if the same amount had fallen in, say, 6 hours. Gorgeous day today!

Magens Bay on STT is closed due to the backwater swamp gut breaking and releasing all the backwater into the bay. The water is all blown and yucky. But Smith Bay (Lindquist) is open and just beautiful. So we decided to hang out for awhile and enjoy a little post Omar relaxation.

What about the beaches? Did alot of the sand get washed away? If so, the parrot fish better get busy putting it back!

No damage to beaches except where the guts empty out,and a few north swells will fill those gaps back in soon.
Plenty of visitors were ignoring beach closures this afternoon (if they knew about them), a few people in the water all down north shore, even at Maho, which is locally famous for excessive bacteria during rainy spells...somewhat mysterious,
since there's no septic tanks in the watershed! The best sunny day we've seen for a while...

This morning on Meet the Press, I read a crawl that said beaches were closed in St. Croix, but it did not mention St Thomas or St John - sooo sad for those folks on vacation.
Hopefully it will back to normal soon.

while this is unexpected and certainly extreme-- there's a reason that this is considered OFF season and why prices are cheaper to visit the islands. That's just the risk you take booking a vacay during hurricane season.
I wonder though if CSA (or is it CAS?) would cover this as a loss though if someone decided not to go. Just curious....

not go because the beaches are (or were) closed? I don't think that would be covered if the weather isn't posing any threat. There is a cancel for any reason rider that costs extra and you must get the coverage within 14 (?) days of your initial deposit.

Again, if St. John beaches are officially closed, it wasn't at all obvious today, or yesterday---no National Park personnel or signs spotted on North Shore. Hawksnest had a very large kindergarten birthday and 3 other local parties going today, with dozens in the water. I don't think any water tests have been completed yet, the Government may have just wanted to cover all possible bases.
