Has anyone every taken the ferry from St. John to Jost Van Dyke. Staying at Maho Bay in Feb would like to go to Jost Van Dyke but really don't want to spend the money on a charter. Once I get there on the ferry, will I be able to walk to different places of interest?

Technically you can walk, but it's a pretty long way, pretty hot, and pretty hilly. I saw several people doing it, but I don't think I would recommend it. Maybe I am just lazy, but you only have about 5 - 6 hours on Jost (arrive around 9:30 am and the ferry leaves at 3:00 pm) and I simply wouldn't want to waste a good portion of my time walking from place to place.

When you step off the ferry, there will be several taxis waiting. I recommend grabbing one immediately (they vacate pretty quickly and don't come back) and having them take you where you want to go. If you want to hit multiple stops, you can arrange with that taxi to pick you back up at a certain time to take you somewhere else, pick you up to take you back to the ferry, etc.

HaHa this is a funny subject to me. When I went to Jost a few weeks ago we met a couple on the ferry over there and they said its not that bad of a walk from dock to White Bay. Ya ok, Im a firefighter in decent shape and it was not very fun at all walking from dock to White Bay in flip-flops. We took a taxi on the way back to the dock. I highly suggest getting a taxi to and from White Bay. Its not really bad walking to Foxy's, but the other direction whooo. Lets say its a nice workout if your looking for one on vacation.

It was well worth the $5 we paid for a cab (which included a few stops). The driver made sure we were picked up in time to not miss the ferry back...

I'd like to thank everyone for their responses. It is possible then to see what I want on Jost van Dyke without spending over $100/pp to get there.

I would definitely take the cab! Most likely, you will be driven by a member of Foxy's family (which has always been the case for us)...One year, one of his son's drove us around, and even stopped in Foxy's front yard to pick us a couple of Mango's.

It's nice to have a local expert give you a guided tour on the way over to White Bay.

Also, they're VERY reliable (in our experience). We always ask them to come back to get us at 1:00 or 1:30 so that we can have lunch at Foxy's prior to getting on the ferry back - and they never disappoint.

BTW - I had heard that Foxy, unfortunatly, has cancer? Has anybody heard of his current state?

I don't know if Foxy had/has cancer or not but I do know he was having some throat issues and isn't singing anymore. He looked fine when we were there in May telling his corny jokes. Foxy's looked to be pretty quiet in the morning when we were there. I would get the cab and head over to White Bay. You can then stroll the beach and go to The Soggy Dollar, Seddy's and Ivan's. I think we will br trying Seddy's for lunch next trip. It is now open for high season.

I always take a cab and it is pretty much a Callwood or a Chinnery......Foxy and Ivan's families are pretty much most of the island.
I think Seddy will be pretty busy now that Alton Brown had him on 'Feasting on the Waves'....
