I found a paperback travel guide titled U.S. Virgin Islands Alive published in 1983 and written by Harriet Greenberg. It has a few pictures, but is mostly a directory listing places to shop, eat, and sleep and things to do and see in STT, STX and STJ. Some of you might remember these places. I wish I could say I do, but unfortunately, I didn't visit the VIs until several years ago.

Here are a few of the people and places it lists on STJ.

Mary-Phylis Nogeuira - rental agent
Miss Meada's
Ric's Hilltop Restaurant
Oscar's Luncheonette
Fred's

Two "fast food emporiums" - Cap't Cook's and Joe's Diner

In Mongoose Junction - Madeline's Bakery, The Lobster Hut, Abu's Kitchen, and the Ship's Lantern.

I liked the description of Abu's Kitchen.
..part of Muggsie's Bar and appears to be owned by two "Flower Children". Large letters atop the menu proclaim "Our Menu is Love" but it helps if you love curried goat or spicy chicken giblets.

Places to shop include Virgin Canvas, Barsel Jewelry, Batik Caribe, Sailor's Delight, Stitches, The Art Project run by Janet Rutnik, The Fabric Mill, The Wire Works, Linda Smith Palmer, Donald Schneel, Wicker, Wood and Shells, and The Pattons.

A comment about Caneel Bay Resort. "Mingling with the Rockefellers etal, will set you back a bit with rates in high season from $240 to $350 a day for a double room. That is not a typo. Remember it includes all meals and lots of day activities."

Other places to stay included "Good-bye Columbus", a wooden house overlooking Reef Bay that slept 6, rented for $650 a week. Wouldn't we love to have those rates back? The book mentions "Salamander", "Island Stones", Carla's Cottages, Raintree Inn, and Serendip Hotel.

I found this interesting reading, so thought others might also. If not, that's OK. I thought I'd share it anyway.

Have nice weekend.

Not too many of those left! Although I was happy to see Mary-Phyllis Noguiera listed. We rented thru her company for our December trip to Island Horizons in Coral Bay. www.privatehomesvi.com
Happy Sunday! :D

I was just thinking -- at least my rental agent's been doing this for a while.

That's really neat. Thanks for sharing!
