Should I do it???

I know I'm asking the wrong crowd here, but I found a good airfare for the family (4) during spring break in April. My husband hems and haws about it claiming "we should try another place", etc, etc... but I know that if I leave it to him, we'll end up paying a fortune to fly somewhere (probably FL) during the mass exodus that is Patriots' Day week in MA (I'm actually shocked I found RT for $477 that week and know it won't last long!).
So I'm contemplating the "surprise" approach; i.e. forgiveness rather than permission. The downside: he may be somewhat annoyed, but he'll get over it; the upside: I don't have to explain to you guys :) (and yes, I am trying to find a way to justify pulling the trigger on these tickets and I know you won't let me down)

So would you do it???

I would only do it if I were positive the hubby could get the week off from work. If he already has it off, you could go ahead and book the trip. Of course, if he's serious about going somewhere else (I don't know why people are like that) and it's going to cause a major incident... How do the kids feel? Can they help you gang up on him?

I'm not sure if I'm helpful. I don't think I could ever just spend that much money about it if I were planning for more than just myself.

Definitely... forgiveness later. If I found airfare for that rate ANY time time of the year, much less spring break, I'd have it booked in less than a heartbeat. You'd probably spend that much or more to get to FLA, and then have to fight your way through all of the mickey-ness. Yuk. I'd grab it. Just my $0.02.

I did this when my husband traveled to Hawaii for business last November. I use the term 'business' losely, as I believe he spent a mere handful of hours doing actual work, and the trip mainly consisted of eating, drinking, and beaching on the company dime.

He came home all tan and feeling guilty... all "Honey I'm so sorry you couldn't come."

"It's okay... I booked us a trip to St. John for May." *ding* :D

STJ vs. FL... no comparison! Go for it and ask for forgiveness later..... that's such a bargain!

Enjoy!!!!

PS it's good to see my ticker and see that we're below the 3 month mark! :-)

As long as you're planning to go somewhere and you know he can get the week off, then go for it.

If he gets annoyed, hand him a painkiller! It won't last.

With the North Swells up, spring break this year felt like half St. John and half Jersey shore. I'd head to the boonies of East End or Kiddel Bay if we go again that week. I'd also seriously consider Virgin Gorda.

Cheers, RickG

Book it. Life is too short and meant for living.

Keep quiet for a while, wrap the tickets up with a

Jimmy Buffet Cd and put it all under the tree. He

cant be mean to you on Christmas !

The answer depends on your marriage. All I can tell you is that if Marcia did that, I would not be pleased.

Even if I don't really have any say in what happens in my own life, I like it when Marcia at least makes me feel as though I do.

Once you spring the STJ trip on him, don't be angry if he goes out and buys a 52" flat screen LCD HDTV without talking to you first. Forgiveness, instead of permission, goes both ways.

If Janie did that for me, I'd love it. But Pete's right---it depends on your relationship. In our case, I'm always planning trips and Janie is the cautious one-- so it wouldn't bother me at all if she turned the tables and planned a trip to STJ. I will say this---you two looked so happy and cute together on your sailing pictures last March. Maybe include one of those great pics of you together in the BVI when you surprise him with the tickets.

I struggle with the "shouldn't we take a trip somewhere else" issue. Right now, I have several trips planned to other places, and potentially no STJ trip in sight. They are very nice trips, but honestly, I really just want to go to STJ!

It might ease his pain that the latter part of April is "off season", and where you stay might be discounted. Aside from that, you already know he'll love it.
Give him a kiss, and everything will fall into place! (You guys, & STJ!)
Remember to smile when you break the news!

Thanks guys! I've been back and forth on this and to be honest my mind is still not made up. Taking time off during Patriots' week isn't an issue, so I'm clear there. The kids are off, so we will have to do something - either take a vaca or arrange a day camp for both of them; either way we'd be spending extra money (although obviously more for if we travel). It really comes down to my being so bold as to do this without getting the okay first. I am typically the more cautious of the two of us; I supposed if I wasn't, the tickets would already be a done deal. I know I'd be thrilled if he did something like this for me, even if it wasn't St. John, but more so if it was. And I realize I would be opening myself up to becoming the recipient of piece of electronic equipment (he has actually done that before). As far as going somewhere else goes, I have no problem, but if we're taking the kids (as in this case), then I prefer to stick with a place we know and trust.

I'll give it some more thought over the weekend and I'll let you know what I decide to do. Thanks for the input!
