Tropical Storm Hanna is making herself felt in DC. We have the first couple of waves of rain coming through. We heard from Jan&MikeVA down in southeast Virginia on the water and they were having Irish Coffees and watching the rain. We had our first power flickers, but with the 90 foot Oak and Poplar trees around here tending to fall on their heads with the least provocation we expect to see power outages. Likely nothing worse than a medium-level thunderstorm can throw at with 7 inches of rain added.

We picked out the veggie garden yesterday, so we won't have a plague of split tomatoes. The mosquitoes are already worse here than STJ, so I imagine we'll have the biblical metaphors and analogies out and working in 7 days time.

Fresh batteries in the flash lights, extra propane stocked, 4 draught beers on and plenty of Goslings Black Seal and Ginger Beer on hand for Dark & Stormies. We're ready. I hope.

Thinking about y'all in Hannah's path....everyone stay safe! Looking ahead to Ike; my family lives close to the Florida panhandle in SE Alabama. Hope this one goes nowhere close to there (but then again it'll have to go somewhere & I pray for those people too). Have a good weekend everyone.

We just came from Rosemary Beach for a week of fleeing Gustav. On our way home we were talking about how we hope that area and especially poor Mississippi and also Alabama stay away from Ike.

Call me superstitious, but I always think the stronger names are the ones that make for huge hurricanes. I didn't think Gustav was a strong name (nor did I about Hanna, Fay, or any of the others this year), but Ike is a STRONG name so I fear for what he has in store for whoever he hits.

p.s. bear in mind that I don't by any means think that the others didn't cause damage cuz I know they did, but it could have been worse for all of them. I pray your family (and everyone else in his path including us) are safe from Ike.

7.13 inches of rain and no sign of slowing down. Hanna is due south 95 miles. The next door neighbors have a storm drain adjacent to our yard - they get to enjoy Lake Hanna. So far the new apple trellis is holding up.

We're 245 feet above sea-level. I imagine we'll be okay for another 30 years.

We are waiting for her arrival. Right now it is just disgusting... 85 degrees and 100% humidity. No wind yet. We are battened down. Put away anything on the deck which can blow around. We secured the boat on Thursday. Most of our power lines are below ground so not usually a problem. I just need to find a better place to park the cars, don't want them under the big tree in front of the house.

I think we will be fine, Ike's the bigger isue for our southern and Gulf Coast friends!

nothintolose....I totally understand. It can be devastating & disruptive no matter what degree one is touched by these storms. Y'all stay safe too & you're in our thoughts & prayers also.

Pouring like crazy out here in Ashburn, Rick. The dogs won't even go out to pee. DH and I went in close to DC for a couple of errands. It was not as rough there.

And I thought the mosquitoes weren't a problem until I went to an event at Landsdowne the other night. I foolishly sat outside with a glass of wine and now I can't stop scratching all the bites on my legs and ankles. We must have a good bat population around the house though. Because I never get bit when I am in the backyard.

I was awoken at about 1:30 this morning when Ms Hanna hit Raleigh. For about 2-3 hours we had a ton of rain. Then, wind all morning. Now, it's sunny and breezy and we're getting ready to go t a baseball game.
