I've been away for a long time....back w/ a question!

Hi to the forum! No one probably remembers me as I haven't been around in about 1-1/2 years. No trips were planned and I couldn't bear to read (except occasionally) about paradise knowing I wouldn't be going! It is nice seeing some of the same names here. Continuity is a good thing! :)

Well, due to an orthopedic issue, our Utah hiking trip in October is a no go.....and miraculously, only 8 weeks out we were able to change our FF miles to STT!
So now our 20th anniversary will be spent on STJ...which is where I'd rather have gone to begin with (nothing against Utah!)! We're booked for Oct.5-12 and will probably be staying at Nautilus.

Now for my question...we've always rented jeeps on STJ, but are considering renting on STT this time. I looked up a couple of sites, but didn't see that big of a price difference for the jeeps. What are the rental car companies used and are there any companies that don't allow their vehicles to go to STJ?

I know that this was/is an oft asked question, but I wasn't able to come up with much in a search. Any help is much appreciated!

I am soooooo excited!!!!!

We are renting from Discount Car Rental on STT, and it is about $100 cheaper than anywhere on STJ for a Jeep Liberty. Their web site is www.discountcarvi.com and their phone number is 877-478-2833.

The others who recommended we rent on STT just told me to make sure the Jeep is in good condition before we take it because if anything happens to it on STJ, then we have to get it to the car ferry.

Thanks for the info! Going to their website now!

Dependable on STT have a wonderful reputation and if you mention you found them on the net I believe they give you a 12% discount :)

Welcome back, Sarah! I'm like you and lurk sporadically when I don't have a trip planned, but we're going back in 9 days (!!!!), and we are renting for the first time on STT. We went with Discount since the rates were way cheaper, they were very nice on the phone, and they claim to have new vehicles. I'll be happy to tell you about our experience when we get back.

We always rent from Budget at the STT airport. Avis also lets you take cars on the ferry, but Hertz does not. The car rental price is lower and you also save money on ferry costs; when you take into account the price for a taxi and passenger ferry, the car ferry is cheaper when you have two or more people.

Thanks Amy! Looking forward to your report and hope you have a fantastic trip!

Teresa Rae, I'm going to call them today and check prices.

Is it a fairly easy drive to Red Hook from the airport? We have always used the CA ferry, so I have no idea about the route, or it's difficulty.
