Well, we took the plunge and booked Caneel for the end of January which leads me to a few questions:

Has anyone taken their sunset sail? Was it worth it?
Also, we'd love to do a dinner in the ruins, although I haven't checked on reserving it yet, probably very limited availability in high season. Has anyone had this experience? Thanks for any help in this area.

Congratulations on a new ticker! We went on a sunset sail out of Caneel on a wooden sailboat (forget the name) in 2001. The captain and first mate were great. They had cocktails and snacks for us. We had a very nice time but no sunset that night It was a gift to us for our wedding. If I remember correctly, it was pretty pricey but I would say it was worth it.

I remember doing a sunset cruise at Caneel. It was on one of their larger motor boats and there was food, drinks and a steel pan band.

We did sailing trips each time we stayed at Caneel. The boats were all gorgeous (a large Hinkley one time) and the crew very professional.

We did at least 6 of Caneel's water trips (motor and sail) over the years and all were pricey and worth the money.

I am envious of your January trip! Caneel versus villa is debated each year and I have Hubs worn down enough to go back in the summer.

There are two evening sails at Caneel. One is actually their ferry--that's the one with the steel pan player. There are cocktails and apps on that sail. IIRC, it's $40-50/pp. The other option is a couples sail on a wooden sail boat--they only take four people out, so you need to book well in advance. That one is around $200--I'd have to double check my paperwork to be sure, but I think that's right. Again, you get champagne and appetizers (but no steel pan player ).

SO jealous! Hey Becky, is that sunset sail on the ferry only for resort guests?

Thanks for your quick responses. I called the concierge at Caneel to get more info and we have decided on the sunset cruise on their ferry since I think my husband would be better off on a motorized boat versus a sail boat as he is prone to motion sickness. It's $65pp for the ferry cruise (takes up to 30 people) versus the sunset cruise (up to 6 people at $80pp)

Also thanks to Liamsaunt for mentioning it on another thread, looks like instead of dinner in the ruins we'll be doing a dinner on the beach. That sounds dreamy.. except for the fact that I'll have to douse myself in super bug spray to ward off all those peskies. For anyone interested, the dinner in the ruins has you select off of the Equator menu in addition to a $150 setup charge. I have not heard the greatest reviews on the Equator so I had some concerns for that choice. The dinner on the beach is a fixed menu (same setup charge) that includes surf and turf (probably comes from the Equator too!) but that appealed to us more than the ruins.

If you get a chance and she's around, check out a watercolor class with Kat Sowa at Turtle Bay while at Caneel. Kat is incredible (and so is the beach!!)
