If you plan to snorkel a lot, bring some shorts/swim trunks that cover the backs of your thighs to avoid sunburn. And if you're bringing an iPod, bring an FM transmitter. Those were the two lessons we learned on our first trip.
Have fun!

Take time your first day to drive the whole island just to get a feel for everything.
Enjoy every minute because before you know it you will be taking the walk of woe.
Get a smoothie from the smoothie truck early on as you WILL want them again.
Have a blast and stay left, mon

Standard advice. Bring half the stuff, twice the money mix with rum and enjoy.

Bring a small plastic bottle to the beach. Mix 1/2 water with dish liquid, squirt couple drops inside/outside of your snorkle mask before each trip in, rinse. Crystal clear mask every time.

Have fun is the most important thing. Thought I would share a page from my travel journal during my first trip, page titled:
Things We've Learned So Far On St. John-Day 3:
1. On this island in the sun, we don't flush for number one!
2. Good morning, Good Afternoon, Good Night.
3. Don't get smeared by a Vitran Truck.
4. Lizards are our friends.
5. Bedtime prep - rum, rum, earplugs.
6. Stay Left, keep wheels on the humps.
7. Donkeys, goats, chickens, dogs have the right of way.
8. Sunblock, bugspray, sunblock, bugspray...
9. They do not have Sea Otters at Maho!
10. Anything with adhesive on it will not stick, not to skin, not to screen windows..nothing!
11. Don't let the beautiful sunrise dupe you into taking 20 pictures every morning!
12. Rum is lighter to carry than beer!
Have fun!

Tight lefts, wide rights. Make that phrase into a song with an island flair and keep it in your head.
Don't wear any scented lotions or perfumes. The bugs love those.
Go with the flow. If you feel like having a drink at 9am, have a drink! (...or two, or four) If you feel like taking a nap in the middle of the day, do it! Find your own rhythm with the island and embrace it.
Enjoy!

Bring some of your favorite lip "stuff" for lack of a better word. Didn't get burned anywhere, but my lips are killing me.

We like Burt's Bees (sp) and Ruth at St. John Spice sells it, along with a bunch of other great stuff.
