Upcoming July Events

Emancipation Tea Races, St. Croix
Hosted by the Department of Tourism, the Emancipation Tea Races will take place on July 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Buddhoe Park on King Street in Frederiksted. The event will feature the Millennium Choir, Scratch Band, St. Thomas Heritage Dancers, and playwright/comedian Paul Keens-Douglas. For more information, call (340) 277-7485

Cultural Day, St. John
During the St. John Festival, celebrate Emancipation Day in the U.S. Virgin Islands at Franklin Powell Park on July 3. Beginning at 3:00 p.m. watch historical re-enactments performed by people from the community and browse the local arts and crafts that will be on sale. Traditional dancers will also perform quadrille, the traditional Virgin Islands dance and historical items and clothing will be on display. A flambo torch parade will proceed through Cruz Bay and live music will play throughout the afternoon. For more information, call (340) 776-6336.

Girls Fete 2008, St. John
Continue the Carnival Celebration at Girls Fete 2008, a Soca music festival hitting the shores of St. John on July 3. The party will feature entertainment by Atlantik Band featuring Destra Garcia Tizzy, Cool Session Brass and Local DJ's. Emancipation Fun Day, St. Croix
On July 3, the Divi Carina Resort & Casino will host a day of fun to continue the celebration of the Emancipation of slaves in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Fort-to-Fort Walk, St. Croix

Cultural Food Village, St. Croix
Following the Fort-to-Fort walk on July 3, the Cultural Food Village will open at Midre Cummings Park at 11:00 a.m., featuring dishes by local vendors reflecting the influence of the seven different nations whose flags have flown over the U.S. Virgin Islands. Emancipation Commemoration Program, St. Croix
Listen to Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan as the keynote speaker at the Emancipation Commemoration Program on July 3 at 1:00 p.m. Taking place at Buddhoe Park, the event will also feature Puerto-Rican bamboula and drumming group Grupo Majestad Negra, historian Mario Moorhead, and The Honorable Charles Williams, Chief of the Carib (Kalinago) of Dominica. Emancipation Art Exhibit, St. Croix
Emancipation Day activities continue on July 3 with an art exhibit at Fort Frederik. The exhibit will include images from a Virgin Islands delegation trip to Ghana for their Emancipation Celebration. For more information, call (340) 277-7485.

Emancipation Street Quadrille, St. Croix
The July 3 festivities end at 8:30 p.m. with the Emancipation Street Quadrille in Frederiksted. The event will feature music by Native Rhythm and Caller Curtis Williams. For more information, call (340) 277-7485.

J'ouvert, St. John
One of the most popular events of Carnival, J'ouvert is an early morning party on July 4 where thousands of people dance through the streets of Cruz Bay behind their favorite bands while spectators stand on the sidelines and enjoy the music. For more information, call (340) 774-3107.

Carnival Parade, St. John
Following the fun of J'ouvert, the Carnival Parade on July 4 is one of the biggest events of the St. John Festival. It takes place in Cruz Bay at 11:00 a.m. and includes thousands of participants and viewers that line the parade route. See Mocko Jumbies, Carnival royalty and listen to bands play while colorfully costumed troupes dance along. Troupes include masqueraders wearing the smallest costumes of bikinis and beads to elaborate outfits that stretch the width of the parade route. Fireworks Over Cruz Bay, St. John

Youth Independence Day, St. Croix
On July 4, Virgin Islands youth will celebrate Youth Independence Day at 2:00 p.m. in Frederiksted. The event will feature the Charlotte Amalie High School Marching Band, St. Croix Rising Stars Orchestra and performances by Local Queens. For more information, call (340) 277-7485.

Horse Racing, St. Croix

Festival Beach Jam, St. John

Jump Up, St. Croix
Only July 11, join the fun of an evening street party St. Croix style in Christiansted. Jump Up is an event that takes place 4 times a year in the streets of downtown Christiansted. Stores stay open late and offer special sales. Vendors line the streets selling local food and drinks as well as fun items for the kids. Social organizations have tables displaying their information to increase awareness. There is live music on every corner and Mocko Jumbies dancing for the crowds in the street. Music Under the Stars, St. Croix
Enjoy an evening under the stars at the Whim Plantation Museum grounds while listening to Jamaican Jazz Fusion. 20th Anniversary Bastille Day Kingfish Tournament, St. Thomas
It's time to fish! It's time to party! It's time to celebrate! On July 13, the Northside Sportfishing Club's 20th Anniversary Bastille Day Kingfish Tournament at Hull Bay Hideaway is a chance to catch the 'big one' while enjoying the camaraderie of family, friends and local residents. Proceeds from the event benefit charitable community organizations. Anglers of all skill levels are invited to enter and everyone comes away a winner. Entry fees are $35 for adults and $20 for juniors ages 8-16. The angler who catches the largest Kingfish will also receive a complimentary weekend for two at Divi Carina Bay Beach Resort & Casino on St. Croix, with airline tickets compliments of Seaborne Airlines. Big Screen on the Beach, St. Croix

Weekly Carnival Extravaganza, St. Thomas
There is no place like Iggies for a taste of Carnival, and local culture. Every Wednesday join the crowd at Iggies Beach Bar and Grill at Bolongo Bay for its famous Cruzan Carnival Extravaganza. Sunset Jazz, St. Croix
On the third Friday of each month, The Frederiksted Economic Development Association (FEDA) hosts an impressive roster of local and international jazz musicians on the Strand Street waterfront stage. Admission is free and families are welcome. Concertgoers are urged to bring their own folding chairs or blankets to spread on the grass. The music starts at 5:30 p.m. and continues for two hours.
