Hi everyone...I have been reading all the great info and am new to the forum. We will be in STJ in 23 days. I was wondering what type of camera you like to use to take the underwater pictures.

SO really likes his Olympus 1030SW for underwater pics.

Are you going to dive or snorkel? Some of the cameras that don't demand an underwater housing, has limited depth and time.

I have recently bought a Canon Powershot A720IS with underwater housing, so that I can dive and take pictures. I was very pleased with the result of both the uw and the other pictures. And the camera is very easy to handle and operate. You could see some of the uw pics on my link below (Album BVI Underwater Apr/May 2008).

Before this new camera, we had a Pentax Optio W10, which could take pictures uw to max 10ft and for max 30 minutes (without housing). We like that camera too. Very easy to handle when you don't need a uw case.

What about disposable underwater cameras? Anyone used those?

We tried once with a disposable, but the result was very bad. Considering how cheap and very good the cameras are today, I would recommend to buy one. Maybe the Pentax Optio W10 could be something. Olympus also has similar cameras that don't need uw housing.

Disposables are not worth a whole lot. You really need to be able to do color corrections.

I like my old Canon S410 with its housing. I use a separate camera for land pictures and just leave my guy in its housing the whole trip.

I like my little Canon (SD850IS) with its housing. When the conditions are right underwater, it takes pretty good pictures for a point and shoot camera. I was very pleased with it on my last trip.

The photos taken by disposable underwater cameras are generally not something you look at and admire. But they could at least trigger your memories of the underwater experiences.

Yo...I use a Cannon Stylus with the underwater housing. Current model is the "760 all weather" one. Great small camera for all around use. You can put it in your pocket for dry stuf and the housing has all the features to let you do the right stuff. I'll be posting some of the pic's in a few days from our June trip. God bless...Bill

We have been pleased with the Sealife Ecoshot that we took last month. Some of the photos are in our reports. I don't think they are as good as they could be because we are not that comfortable with it yet and we didn't do any correction. Those shots are right from the camera.

We may be the only ones on the Forum using it. It has a twin brother from Vivitar.

We just left island thursday. Between me, my wife, and two daughter, we took 2621 pictures on a Olympus 1030SW (brand new) and 1383 pictures on a Olympus 770SW (not so brand new... it took 2500 pictures under Kauai last summer... and a whole lot more after that.)

About 90% of the pictures are on a beach, in a reef or on the back side of a cay. We love both the old Olympus 770 and the new 1030... their ruggedness, ease of use and picture quality are fantastic!

Now the sad news. Why the 1030SW photo count is about double the 770SW is that about 1 hour into a 2 hour morning snorkel at Hawksnest on SJ Day 4 ( great beach! ) the old 770 shut off. One of the seals leaked.

Even so - - - if it is not repairable, I'd buy the same.

Hey King, I had a leak in our 790 on our last day on STJ. Its dead now, so let me know if you have any luck on repairing your Olympus.

Get a good strap for your camera. I made one out of a sunglass cord and my canon is now floating somewhere around Great St. James island. I lost it last week!

I wanted a cord and ran into Cruz Bay Watersports right before our charter to see if they had something. They didn't so I tried to make a cord out of a sunglasses cord. The knot came undone and I didn't realize it until it was long gone.

So if anyone finds a camera around that island, it has a great movie of us snorkeling with a turtle and other stuff!
