TSA - Liquids - Carry On Bags

I had some time this weekend to look at the TSA web site regarding carrying liquids on board. What I found was that prescription and over-the-counter medications are permitted in "reasonable" quantities. Your TSA agent may not think a case of baby formula (a week's supply?) is reasonable. The particular page can be found at the link below:

As a result, I chose to gamble a $3 can of saline for my contact lenses by bringing it through the check point this morning. It was a small investment to find out how this would work. The short answer is that it went through with little notice. The key is to pull it out of the bag and declare it as a medical supply. It does not have to be in your 1 quart zip lock bag. Here is a quote from their page:
"You are not limited in the amount or volume of these items you may bring in your carry-on baggage. BUT if the medically necessary items exceed 3 ounces or are not contained in a one-quart, zip-top plastic bag, you MUST declare to one of our Security Officers at the checkpoint for further inspection."
The good news is that they list items that are included in this exemption. The list includes eye drops, saline solutions and for those going on vacation KY jelly is also specifically listed.
