Planes, Trains and Automobiles

I was hyperventilating too hard to worry about barf bags, lol. This was the smallest plane I'd ever been in, I'm claustrophobic, it was pitch dark and windy and raining. And - we had no idea what we'd find when we reached St. Thomas. It was way too late and probably too rough for the ferries. Caneel, bless their hearts, kept their little office open for us and found a motor boat to take us over to St. John. The boat's skipper was actually called Captain Ron. We left from some park somewhere. This was our first trip; we had no idea where we were!

It was memorable, and we have been going back since. :-)

We arrived at Caneel, they gave us a fruit plate (everything was closed) and we found the bottle of rum in the room. The lights came out, the rain stopped, it was really that "aha" moment for me.

Of course, I really didn't have to plan to leave on September 15, the very height of hurricane season. I thought the odds were okay. Well, wrong. That was Hurricane Jeanne in 2004, and we were delayed going down by one day. Now we go the first week in November, lol.

Noreen,
You reminded me of a funny STJ story.

Back in the late 70's, you had to connect in Puerto Rico to go to St John. The runway in St Thomas could not accomodate large jets. So we would catch a small, propellor plane. We traveled with another family and at this time I was about 10yr. old.

When waiting for the plane, a gentleman came around and asked us our weight, so they could place the correct amount of luggage on the plane. The woman that we traveled with was a larger sized lady (my mom's friend). When they asked my mom her weight, she answered "148lbs." They moved on to Judy(friend), who replied "147lbs." Then they came to me, which I answered "115lbs." My mother gazed at me with a puzzled look and asked "Why did you say 115?" I answered her back "DID YOU HEAR WHAT JUDY SAID? I HAD TO MAKE UP THE WEIGHT SOMEWHERE OR WE'LL CRASH!!!" I think at that time I may have weighed 70lbs.

Thanks for the funny memory!!!!

Tracy, that's a funny story. You were a very practical young lady. I wish we'd been travelling to St. John since the 70s, but my mother wouldn't willingly set foot on a large jet, much less a puddle jumper. The one memory I have of flying with her, my father had to point out that she was holding her novel upside down.

So, thanks for the memory as well!
