Can anyone give me some help about cell phones on St John ? We have Alltel. We need to be in contact with family while we are there. Worried about roaming charges. Any suggestions ?

We also have Alltel, and we are from High Point, NC and asked them about our cell phone when going to STT at the end of the month.
Called Alltel and they said that we should pay the $10 fee to add the additional roaming area to our existing plan. Be sure to explain that you will be in the US Virgin Islands, as the 1st person we spoke with thought that the USVI was the same as the Bahamas. We had to ask to speak with a 'supervisor' before it was all figured out.
We have unlimited texting, and will use this feature during the day as it will save on the minutes, and then will use the free calling feature after 7pm.
They also said that we can remove this extra service when we returned.
Have a great time.

Go online or to Walmart and get an At&t Prepaid GoPhone. At&t Cingular is the ONLY cell phone company with towers on St John (2)

That being said, rely on your villa phone and take a long distance calling card with you as cell phones and the rock do not get along to well!

Thanks Gizzmo,
Just called Alltel again and they said there is no service in the USVI. We are on our way to Walmart. Thanks for the info.

Gizzmo is right on with this recommendation. That's exactly what we do. We carry a prepaid phone but check in with those at home from the villa with a calling card.

We just got back yesterday. We had spotty coverage with a Virgin pre-paid phone. It was cheaper than the ATT phone and worked well in some places and not at all in others.

We also use a calling card from the villa phone, no service on our Nextel. (didn't make me mad!!)
