Night snorkels

Looking for ALL of the info I can get on night snorkeling on STJ.
Any info you want to give me (where, when, how, what to bring/use, etc.) is greatly appreciated as we have NEVER done it but want to do it.

Maybe you can piggy back with a night dive group? Obviously you'd be on the surface but you wouldn't be solo.

Not so sure about night snorkeling but hubby did his 2nd STJ night dive in November and loved it.
It was almost a full moon and they were able to do much of the dive without lights so that might be something to consider if you are serious about it.
Haulover has a nice reef not far at all off shore. He said the bioluminescence was amazing!

We are hoping to do it off of the beach. We will be there during a full moon.
Just wondering what beaches would be best. Hawksnest was suggested to us and Maho.
Just wanting to hear from peeps that have done it before so I know what to expect.

I would recomend that if you try a night snorkel,you should have some type of light on shore near your point of entry.A glow stick,lantern,ect.Then you will know where the beach is when you wonder out.Any light from the moon helps as well.Never snorkel a reef at night that you haven't vistited durning the day.It will help you better understand the layout of the reef.I think the best places to visit would be Cinnamon,Hawksnest{carefull,shallow reef},Maho by the Goat trail,and Francis.Night snorkeling is fun!I like Maho the best.If you check in your dive light at the airport don't put your batteries in it.They will take it apart and dump all the parts back in the suitcase.Keep them seperate-trust me

Good point from parafins. Hanging a glow stick makes a lot of sense. We've always had enough light to distinguish our entry/exit from the tree line. Plus, our underwater flashlights are strong enough to illuminate the beach.
We enjoyed Hawksnest, but stayed to the side of the reef. Maho on the right side is great day or night.
