I know your not going to like this answer but it depends on the screener I,ve have had them tell me as long as it is frozen when you go thruogh the check point you are ok and other say no way.

Techni ice is definitely a gel, frozen or not. I would check it or plan to go with no refrigerant (you may, whether you want to or not). I bring techni ice unactivated with me if I want to use it on the leg back.

Back when I used to work in the Aleutians on occasion I would bring a cooler of frozen salmon home as checked luggage. As long as the salmon was in a true freezer with temperatures below 0F it was frozen when I got home 30 hours later.

One trick is to pre-chill the cooler. I put the whole cooler in the freezer overnight pre-packed. Or, just fill it with ice and then empty the ice and wipe out the cooler before you pack it with food.

Checking it as luggage is the safest bet.

I used it in a carry on in Feb with no questions. I may have gotten a silent "pass" because I was using it in our toddler's lunch cooler and no one looked twice.

I agree with Waterguy, it likely depends on the scanner. In the past three years, I have had fantastic luck taking supposively banned stuff thru, all related to travelling with a baby/toddler.

Hi Pia! That was me asking about this on another forum. I don't think I'm going to try to pack it with Techni-Ice now. I will either just pack the cooler tightly and hope it stays frozen or scrap the whole idea and just buy everything down there.
That salmon sounds great! Do you get it there on St. John? You said that it's only available a couple weeks per year .... when is that?

We just put all our frozen stuff in one of those stay cold bags ya get at the store and throw it in our carryon ten to twelve hours later take it out and its still frozen. If ya do have a little thawing it certainly is not enough for spoilage although we are talking fish so extra care should be taken.

Cptn, what kind of store do you get those bags in? That might be what I need.

We had ours confiscated on return trip home.
At O'Hare they were nice going down to St. John.
This year they have really tightened up and will
confiscate it. I had lip gloss taken by United last
weekend. Had my ziplock bag for everything in 3 oz.
size etc.. Depends who you get.
Sam's Club sells the soft-side insulated bags that work really well. Get ice at a restaurant once you
go through security. They are usually really nice about it.

KY I think we got ours from walmart but have seen them in our grocery store too, I would ask so ya don't have to search forever. Just seen the softsided ones the other day at Krogers thoose would probably even work better but never have had a problem with the cheaper plastic foil ones.
