Well, I turned forty, did the Polar Plunge, lost about 25 pounds, am training for a triathlon (yikes, only a month away!), and now I think I need a tatoo. Next, I might jump out of a plane....

I know that tattoos are very personal and all that, but I want mine to be about St. John. I'm not much into the petroglyphs, but really love Sea Turtles. So, I am looking for any ideas and where on my body to put it - somewhere where it won't hurt would be appreciated. And no inappropriate places - Jorge and the other MILF guys....!

Any advice?

Inside of the ankle or a shoulder that you can cover for dress up. My wife had a butterfly on her ankle when she turned 30 and a pair of dolphins that made a small heart on her shoulder when she turned 40.

The Girl Scouts have a great do it yourself kit.

I hear you can get them at Woody's as well.

OMG, precisely why I had my rose drawn up closer to my shoulder..didn't want it to turn into a long-stem Too funny! Good advice though.

First off- you GO girl with all your accomplishments!!

I have 3 and 2 are flowers and 1 is the word-protect- written in Chinese(why? I dunno spur of the moment while with my girlfriend getting her 1st one)I'm supposed to go back and get 2 more words: mother-earth
Anyway, just above your ankle or your shoulder I think are decent places. Depends on what you do for a living, who you want to see it, etc. I love your idea of a sea turtle...I'm sure if you like them now you always will.

Oh almost forgot, pick an area that is more fleshy than bone, won't hurt as much. Also, the outline is the most uncomfortable and IMO feels like bee stings. All in all it is not bad pain wise.

Beware though...once you get one you get "ink fever" goofy phrase for you'll want more!

Like CG said, choose your body part wisely. A friend's daughter had a snake tatooed down the middle of her stomach a few years back. She was thin, toned and more than happy to show off her snake.

She recently had her second baby. I can't imagine what that snake looks like now!!

At first, I was going to respond in my usual, smartass manner...I had about ten really good ones, some of which even Marcia thought were funny. Then, I said, "no" it's really none of my business. But, then again, you posted it here and invited it to be our business.

Just one man's opinion here...I think tattoos look awful on women...and on men, for that matter. My woman is beautiful as she is...I don't need to see some other "artwork" on her body...especially if it came from some slug on Willy Street.

The whole thing reminds me of guys with ponytails or pierced ears. At one time, both may have been symbols of rebellion or youthfulness, but now just seem passe.

I'm sorry, I'm not a big fan of tattoos. One example: A supposedly professional woman I work with bent over one day to change the toner in our copy machine and she had some kind of tattoo on her "back side." That vision changed my perception of her forever.

I'm on the side of no tatoos. It distracts from looking at the person when it is showing.

Okay I am open-minded enough to understand tattoos are NOT for everyone...however, I personally know lots of professional people that have them; including physicians that I work with. What is to be considered though is where you have them. So that you cannot see them when it's appropriate not to share... and to be able to show when it is appropriate to share.

Find a spot that won't sag!!! I have a friend that got one when she turned 60 on the top of her thigh so that she could see it and show it to people but it wouldn't be visible when she is dressed. That is a place that doesn't sag too bad after time too!

I personally don't have one and don't want one but if I did that would be where I would get mine.

My 2 cents:

I have 7 tattoos and several piercings. I am a Professional. I am a Mom. I am a Wife. The tattoos don't determine my work ethic or how educated I am. They do not interfere with my parenting skills (no, I do not allow my daughters to be tattooed or pierced) or what kind of wife I am. They decorate my body in a way which I wanted them too. Key word - I.

With that being said, I also respect the fact that a work place is not a show place. In many business communities, you have people who do not want to see tattoos or piercing. Thus, I have strategically placed all my tattoos and piercings such that they cannot be seen unless I let them been seen. Obviously, you will see them in a swim suit but who the heck is wearing a swimsuit to work???

Tattoos are very personal choice. Certainly one that shouldn't be made on a whim. If you want a tattoo, by all means, go for it
