DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM & NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER MAGAZINE AWARD YOUTH PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST WINNER
ST. CROIX, U.S. Virgin Islands, April 28, 2008 - The Department of Tourism and representatives from National Geographic Traveler magazine announced today the grand prize winner of the publication's Third Annual "In My View" Caribbean Youth Photography Contest. Elena Christian Junior High School student Francisco Martinez captured first place for his submission of "Boy in Archway." The 15-year-old student was honored today at his school during a student assembly. Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty, National Geographic Traveler magazine representative, Kim Currie and school principal Willard John were on hand to offer congratulatory messages, award certificates and prizes. The students were also treated to a photo presentation by renowned National Geographic Society photographer, Annie Griffiths Belt.
As part of his prize Martinez will receive a 35 mm digital camera and he and his parents will travel to Washington, D.C., for a four-day, three-night stay courtesy of National Geographic Traveler. There the talented winner will receive a private tour of the National Geographic Society and be taken on a whirlwind photographic tour of the Nation's Capital by one of the magazine's leading photographers. Martinez' winning photograph will also be published in an upcoming issue of the magazine.
Sponsored by National Geographic Traveler magazine and administered in the USVI by the Department of Tourism, the competition invites Virgin Islands' students aged 12 to 17 to submit photos that capture the best attributes of their island.
"We are delighted to once again collaborate with National Geographic Traveler magazine and are especially pleased that a Virgin Islander has captured the top prize", said Nicholson-Doty. "The contest affords us a snapshot of our destination through the eyes of our youth and reminds us of the important role young people play in conveying the beauty of our islands to the world. We congratulate Francisco Martinez for his outstanding achievement," concluded Nicholson-Doty.
