Car top carriers?

You know those cars you see on the highways in the summer, filled to the rafters and with that big thing on the rooftop? That will be us this summer on our annual Maine jaunt to the lake. We have been taking Charlie's dad with us the last few years and we are really packed in with stuff and 3 people in our Nissan Xterra. Last year we ended up taking 2 cars but not doing that this year!
So, we want to get the roof thing but I have no idea what to get or where to get it. Anyone have experience with these things?

A Sears auto center usually carries some. And Pep Boys might also. Try Googling Thule I believe they make allot of different units.

I have a Yakima "sp" it is used for skis in the winter and what ever in the summer if I'm not taking the truck.

My hubby has the Yakima Space cadet (funniest name ever) for his car. Google cargo boxes for the most choices.
As a biker, he always had yakima bike racks so when it was time for a cargo box, we went with them. Good quality, decent price. Very easy to use.
We would have had to leave one of the kids home if not for this on our last (local) trip to the beach.

Hi MB. We bought one several years ago at Sears, and here are two handy tips I'd like to share with you.
Handy Tip #1 - Close and lock it each and every time BEFORE you take off.
Handy Tip #2 - Pay attention to the height limit if you go into a parking garage.
I won't say how I came across this information, because it may incriminate someone I live with.

Can't miss a trailer hitch , does anything stick out from under the center of the rear bumper with a metal ball on top?

Watch Craigslist. You should be able to grab a decent one for less than $50. They are space savers when on your car, but they are just the opposite when trying to store in your garage; thus they are ususally the first to go when someone wants to organize and reduce clutter.
