Thanks for all the info. Is it better to check the cooler as baggage? what is the max weight the cooler can weigh? We will fly Delta.

I checked my cooler in as baggage because I had packed a half gallon of milk in it.The cooler had wheels which made it easy to move.I froze drinking water in bottles for my ice and later used them on the trails.On our return trip I rolled up our rum in our beach towels and packed them in the cooler.It worked out very well!We flew US Air,so the cooler had to be under 50 lbs. I'm only going to echo what parafins said. I think it's better to check your cooler (you have to if you use Technice or something similar).

Checked Baggage
You can check two bags per passenger free of charge.
Each bag must:
Weigh 50 pounds (22.5 kg) or less.
Not exceed 62 inches when you total length plus width plus height.
If you have a bag that exceeds these allowances, see Excess Baggage.
Exceptions:
Business Elite® and first class passengers are allowed 3 checked bags at no charge up to 70 lbs.
Passengers traveling to or from Key West and Marathon, Florida are limited to only one checked bag.
The free weight allowance is 70 pounds (32 kg) for tickets purchased in Brazil, or for tickets purchased in Japan when traveling to/from Brazil.
