If you had a week to split between LA and SanDiego what would your must do's in each location?

I guess the real question I have to ask is whether you have to spend it split between those two cities. If not there are lots of options especially if you're flying into LA. Also depends on what time of year. I think there's more to do in the Los Angeles area than San Diego, but if you are going to SD, definitely the Old Town. If you don't have to be in those two cities, I've got a better itinerary so let me know.

Balboa Park & all the museums
Old Town and The Old Town Mexican Cafe
Sea World
Coronado Island
In L.A. I wouldn't miss:
(if you're doing the "tourist" thing) - Universal Studios
The Getty Museum
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art
The La Brea Tar Pits
The Griffith Observatory
Paramount Pictures Studio Tour (better & less commercial than Universal)
(if you come to Orange County) - Disneyland

Just had a cousin come back from LA and they did some of the things CG listed plus some TV studios. The one big thing they said was that to read about the LA traffic was one thing, but to experience it first hand by spending way too much time sitting in traffic was quite another. It took them a lot longer to get from place to place than they ever anticipated, and this comes from folks that grew up in NYC.

Oh yeah! I forgot TV shows! TV show tickets are FREE! All you have to do is contact the different stations and request them. Sometimes you can get in at the last minute if they can't fill the audience. Most TV tapings I've been to have had room for more. In fact, when I went to The Price Is Right, they offered us to stay for the 2nd taping because they didn't have enough audience.

Thanks for all the suggestions. DH is originally from SanDiego, but its been more than 20 years since he's been back. Many of the SD suggestions were on his list so its good to know its still current.
Is Catalina something that is worth the trip. I'd love to get out on the water without the presure or responsibility of renting a boat.
Promo, we don't know yet where we are flying into, depends on the schedule and fares. We may just go in and out of one place and drive to the other. More time will be spent in and around SD though because of some family obligations. I've been to LA a few times so I'm more interested in SD or even other places nearby.

Catalina is definitely worth the trip, but realize there's not a whole lot to do there, however there's enough to keep you busy for the day. Last time we went, we took the inland motor tour which was very interesting and affords some beautiful views from the top of the island. There's also the Casino tour (no it's not a Casino any more) which is pretty cool, too. I don't know about boats to Catalina from San Diego, but you can catch one from Dana Point and it's about a 2 hr. trip one-way. There are also boats from Long Beach and Newport Beach, and it's a bit of a shorter trip to the island from those places. Sometimes it's nice to stay overnight on the island, and they have some wonderfully funky old hotels that are pretty cool.

When I went to Catalina a few weeks ago I had only one choice for leaving Orange County and it was San Pedro, because there was dredging going on in Long Beach where the Catalina Express docks. Check into that if you think about leaving from OC, not sure if Long Beach has reopened.

Ive seen a real cheap flight from NY to San Diego but it connects through Milwakee with a 35 minute connection time. This is too tight right? Its the first plane out of NY for the day, so that might help. any advice?

I was in San Diego for biz back in January and really liked our side trip over to Coronado. The hotel alone is worth the trip. Beautiful!
Also, La Jolla Coves was gorgeous at sunset.
