We are in our final stretch (21 days to go b4 on the island - yeah!) and just getting down to details now. What forms of payment are taken for the car ferries? Don't know which one we'll use but will be doing a ow ticket each way.

Also anyone know of resturants that DON'T take credit cards - if so which?

Do the grocery stores take credit cards?

So very excited now...cannot wait to leave the snow and cold. We had 2+ weeks of -5 to -15 degrees. It warmed to 25 the last 2 days but with it snow. Thanks for any info.

pretty sure it's cash only at Deli Grotto.

As for Grocery, we always used a card, no problem. But they do ask for ID, FYI.

Bring cash for the car ferry. I use cash when I can, the credit card fees can be high for the vendors. The restaurants usually have the fees built into their pricing.

Anchorage to STJ? Now that's a trip. I used to do a good bit of work in the Aleutians - that was a tough commute from DC.

The only place I remember going where I had to have cash was Quiet Mon.

Baked in the Sun (yummy cookies/danish/bagels, 3rd floor Marketplace) was cash only.

Mixology and Starfish take plastic. Bring cash for breakfast and lunch, plastic for dining out. Cash for cocktails - anytime.

And a shameless plug for our favorite store in Coral Bay (paper or plastic)

I'm pretty sure Donkey Diner in Coral Bay does not accept credit cards.

Thanks all for the info. It will be helpful in the planning...

And Rick G - I lived in DC for 8 yrs before here. I know a little about the distance (although I was only coming as far as Anchorage) since for a couple of years I was travelling DC to Anchorage about every 2-3 months. Racked up the FF miles though.

Just to let everyone know - Mixology is now closed as they have gone (I believe) into delivery only and their old store is no more :(
