I have been to STJ 3 times and have never encountered what I would consider a "crowded" beach.
If you go early in the morning, I don't think you will have a problem anywhere.
You may want to check out which days the cruise ships come to Trunk.

I would guess that Hawksnest and Maho are popular amongst the locals and would have accordingly more weekend traffic.

I agree with sea-nile, haven't really been on a beach in St. John and considered it crowded. And the good thing is, there are so many North Shore beaches in a row that if you don't like the look of one, zip on to the next! :)

Off The Beaten Beach:
Denis - long hike, great snorkeling
Jumbie - easy access, go early, limited parking keeps the crowds away
Little Lameshur - long drive, favorite beach
Brown Bay - 2 mi hike, big grassy bay with good snorkeling on the right point

The Ranger in Cruz Bay said that the big cruise ship days are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. She said the best days to go to Trunk are Saturday and Sunday.

Sundays I'd avoid Hawksnest, Maho, Frances and Lameshur as these are beaches the locals most often use on the weekends but if you go early you'll probably be fine no matter where you go.
