My husband and I are planning a 25th anniversary trip to STJ in July. Our 1st visit was in 1989 for our 6th anniv., and we have been trying to get back ever since. You can imagine our excitement over finally having the opportunity to return. We are so grateful for all the valuable information on this forum.

Does anyone have advice for scalp protection while snorkeling? My husband's hair is thinning and we would hate for a sunburned scalp to hinder our fun.

Hi I use face sunscreen on my head and a ball cap when ever I'm not snorkeling

When I am snorkeling I wear a dee-rag. They are for men and women. There's lots of different patterns available. You can see them here:

They stay on best if you get your head and the rag wet before tying it on.

I second the dee-rag recommendation.

I actually sent Dee fabric on a couple of occasions to make custom ones - she's great to work with (and quite the scuba photographer as well!)

I just rub 30+ sunscreen in the top of my head... works fine for me.

I might order a couple dee rags very cool patterns. I too am starting to be follicly challenged and use something similar when riding my motorcycle. Have to givem a try snorkeling.

My hubby uses a regular old fashioned bandanna, works well also.

Banana Boat used to make a spray for hair/scalp protection (think it was 30 spf) and for the life of me, I cannot locate it anywhere anymore. IF anyone knows what I am talking about and can tell me if it still exists, I'd be very happy. That stuff was great! THat would be my recommendation after the previous posters' recommendations.

My husband uses those black caps that the football players use. It works great.

When we were on the Island of Lesvos in Greece in 2003 for 15 days, we bought two do rags in black and tan - polyester blend, lightweight. We've worn them snorkeling for the past 4 years on STJ. Make sure you wet them before putting on. Forget the sunscreen on your head (even if you have lots of hair!) - do rags are the way to go.

In 2004 when I finally realized exactly how little hair I had (after torching my skull over on Tortola) I picked up a bright yellow bandanna at St John Spice. Now, I wear it when I snorkel. It serves 2 purposes; sun protection and the rest of the gang can make sure I don't wander off too much. You can spot me from miles away with my yellow head.

I'm thinking that I like the dee rags, though.

Hey thats a great idea for the yellow dew rag as I tend to get a little crazy when I snorkel.This would make my wife more relaxed knowing I would be more visible to boats.
