ST. CROIX, U.S. Virgin Islands - February 7, 2008 - The Department of Tourism is compiling a comprehensive database of local businesses and individuals in the U.S. Virgin Islands who provide products or services of cultural interest. Artists, craftspeople, historical and eco-tour guides, culinary artists and entertainers should contact the Department of Tourism with a description of their products (25 words or less), information about when and where the products are available and contact information. The primary purpose of the database is to inventory what products and services are available so that the Department can accurately market the destination, in particular St. Croix. The database will also serve as a useful resource when planning special events such as cruise ship welcome receptions or itineraries for visiting media and travel agents.
"Visitors are looking for authentic cultural experiences and we know that there are many talented people in our community who wish to share their craft with visitors. By letting the Department know what you are doing and where to find you, we can create opportunities for exchange," said Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty. "Whether you work from home or have a storefront, whether you build West Indian furniture or press cane juice, we want to hear from you!"
The Department is also interested in finding volunteers to welcome visiting travel writers in their homes to share information and anecdotes about the culture and history of the Virgin Islands. As part of the Department's "At Home" program, travel writers gain a deeper understanding of the islands' unique cultural heritage through discussion with local residents. To provide your information, please contact Trina Soto-Clarke at the Department of Tourism's Frederiksted Office at 340-772-0357 or send an email to tsclarke@usvitourism.vi.
