This will be our third trip to St. John's, family of four will be headed back there this June, and I still have questions:
Where do we rent fins? We have masks and snorkels but will need fins for the week.
My family loves large waves - the last two times we were there everything was pretty calm - what side of the island or which beaches tend to have the larger waves?
We want to rent a dinghy - do you recommend a full day rental or half day - I believe we are planning on renting from Noah's Little Ark.

I would do the full day boat rental we did it in seo=pt. and just had enough time to see what we wanted to. you can rent fins from cruz bay water sports.

I do the same thing......take my mask and snorkel and rent fins. I use Hurricane Alley at Mongoose Junction. It's easy to park and they are right on the front corner by the parking lot.

No waves in June unless there's a storm coming. Winter has north shore sells that can stir up some pretty big waves by STJ standards.

We rented from Noah's Little Arks in November for 1/2 day and I wish we rented for the whole day. We only had enough time to snorkel Waterlemon and then take a short trip back at Hawksnest.

Drunk Bay will feed your need but I wouldn't get in the water there.
It's funny,no waves is why I like SJ so much.Different strokes for different folks.

Full day, hands down. We always head all the way out to Waterlemon, snorkle, have lunch and then slowly make our way back, stopping at whatever beaches/snorkle spots capture our fancy. A half day (we did that once) isn't enough time to really enjoy the trip. Have an awesome time!

I'm confused....you can swim or snorkle out to Waterlemon! Or are you coming from a different part of the island?

You can snorkel out to Waterlemon Cay from Leinster Beach. I found it to be really easy and I'm not an excellent swimmer. I'm in decent shape though, so maybe that's why. With fins I can go longer distances. We hugged the shoreline and crossed the deeper channel. Once we got to the Cay, we went ashore and took a little break.

People also have boats take them out there. I'd say it takes 20 minutes to swim out, but that was taking our time and snorkeling with turtles.
