This new restaurant seems to offer some local cooking at reasonable prices. We intend to give it a try when we visit St. John sometime this spring.

"I posted first about this new place in the last cheap eats topic... but I thought I should give it it's own topic. This is a new place about a mile and a half up Centerline Road. It is local food and it is really tasty! Her menu changes daily, so you can call and ask what she has, or she will let you know when you get there. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are big. It is served "plate" style with the main dish and then all the extras loaded on the plate. Some of her offerings in the past have been, stewed chicken, conch, stewed fish, baked chicken, pork chops, to name a few. If you are curious to try West Indian fare, this would be a great place to start. The plates are loaded up with lots of local favorites. The woman who owns the place, Caryen (I am pretty sure that is how she spells it, I posted "Karen" before, but I know she doesn't spell it that way), runs the whole show. She cooks, she greets, she serves, and she does it all day long! I'm not sure what the exact prices are, but I went with three other people, we all ate, and all had two drinks and desert and the bill was $78!!! That is a crazy cheap price for here!

I've eaten there twice now and I'd say the review you posted is right on. The food is delicious and the owner/cook is quite friendly. The review is correct about the menu changing daily, so we just found out what was on the menu when we sat down at our table and the owner told us. Give it a try, it's great!

Thanks for the feedback...we will definitely give it a try. We're also looking forward to eating at the new Italian restaurant this Spring....have you tried it? It was closed when we were on St. John this past September, as was the case with several of the restaurants. We did get to try two restaurants that we hadn't tried before....Paradiso & Ocean Grill; both were excellent...mia

I've eaten at Da Livio a few times too, and here is my honest opinion. I like the restaurant b/c I know the owner and know how much hard work he put into it. He is really sweet, but I think there are some kinks that still need to be worked out. The food and everything is authentic Italian, including the chef! It's great food, but the one thing that is missing in my opinion is a high level of customer service. You'll pay about the same per entree at other high-end St. John restaurants (La Tapa, Stone Terrace, etc.), but you're just not getting the high level of service you'd expect, which I hate to say because I know Livio means well. If you want really authentic Italian, this is the place to go!

I've had several meals there, which includes, local fish dinner, pork chops, stew chicken and conch.

There is ample parking and reasonable rates.

Thanks hillcrest for the Sogo link. I have seen that place before but didn't know much about it, we haven't been there yet. We are looking forward to Sweet Plantains this time so I should put Sogo on the list as well as Windy Level too.

Pia, last I heard he was still not making his own pasta, although he keeps claiming the freshly made pasta is soon come. I did get gnocchi there once that was freshly made though, which was delicious. I'd have to agree with the assessment that for the prices they're currently charging they should be making their own pasta! I've promised myself I'm not going back there until the pasta is homemade.
