Help - worried about timing

Hi all, esp those of you with expereince getting to STJ. I'm worried about timing...We arrive at 4:15pm on a Friday (they just changed the schedule getting us there later - great) on American from Miami. We've booked a Budget rental car and plan to drive over to the car ferry and head to St John on the last ferry (I think it is 6:30). Are we going to make it barring significant tardiness of the flight?
And if anyone knows -
Does American from Miami often run late?
What time does Budget close?
Who has the latest car ferry? Is there one at 7p?
Anyone have what might proved to be the quickest route from airport to ferry?
Should we book the last ferry in advance?
Is the passenger ferry near the car ferry?
If we were to miss the last car ferry is there a place to park the car safely overnight (thinking we'll just ride over on the passenger one and I'd come back early the next morning to retrieve if we have to)?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

I can't answer any of your questions about the car ferry, but I have been flying through Miami for years, and depending on the time of year, a thunder storm can make for quite a delay. Make sure you have enough time between flights, because it can easily be a 30 minute walk to get to your connecting gate.

You could leave your car if you miss the last ferry. But depending where you are staying on STJ you might have a hard time getting a cab to pick you up at your villa and take you back down town to go and get it.

I can only answer one question and I learned the answer here on the forum. Everyone seems to suggest buying a 1-way ferry ticket, because if you buy a round trip, you'll have to take the same ferry back and it sort of throws a wrench in the works if your plans change and you want to go back sooner or later than the return trip ticket you have.

California Girl,
What do you mean that if you by a round trip ticket you have to take the same ferry back? The same ferry such as Roanoke, Boyson or Republic, or the same TIME? This would be a good tid bit of information to have!!!!!

what Jorge said! you would have to wait and get on with the same ferry company. whereas if you buy one way on your return you get on the next available ferry.
oh where's Ca Girl when you need her?

And just a heads up, Roanoak is down right now and have been for approx the last 10 weeks or so (having trouble passing inspections
)
The last ferry is at 7pm and if you buy a roundtrip on one ferry you have to return on that ferry - best to buy a one way

Thank you for the replies. That was something we had not even considered. This will be our first time renting a jeep on St Thomas.
Pia, also thank you for the directions!!! We printed them out and they will be making the trip with us.
Only 16 days to go!!!!!
