Latest re. Verizon?

I haven't seen a thread on this in a while... just wondering if Verizon wireless calls in and out of STJ are still considered not part of the "US." Last time I used my phone there I got an awful bill.
I couldn't get a straight answer out of the person I asked.

Your question made me go upstairs and pull out my Verizon bills, which I never remembered to check after our May trip to STJ. I'm on the $5.00 a month texting plan and I mostly texted when I was there. My bill showed a roaming charge of $18.51 and no other extra charges. I don't think that's too bad.

Hi, I still think STJ is considered another planet by Verizon Wireless! Last year we also got sky high bills so this year - (we leave on Jan 9th) I took some advice from some forum posts and just purchased an ATT pay as you go phone. I also got one for my bro & sis who will be there so hopefully we can all communicate.
I'll post when we return on whether or not we are successful. The other added bonus besides the cost savings should be way better coverage on the island.

Thanks for the info.. we are leaving Friday so I guess we'll have to be careful with our phones.

Maryanne- You should be able to call your carrier and get a straight answer on cost, if you don't I would call back and try another, uh..."call center professional"...if you know what I mean... Last year when I went to Aruba I just called first and they said no problem but they needed to "enable" some capability first...no additional charges...AT&T.
