A lady we know gave us this big frozen chunk of Yellowtail. It measures 9" long and 4 1/2" wide at the widest part, and about 2 1/2" thick at the thickest part. I took 2 pictures so you can see it from the front & back. I so don't know how to cook this!! HELP!

I would just grill it. A light marinade, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper, maybe some garlic. If you have left over make a niscoise salad the next day, tuna, potatoes, green beans and a vinigrette.

Bring it here to Kentucky and I'll show you how to cook it. Ha!! :D

Seriously - I would cook it like sailorgirl says.

Enjoy!!!

I'm on board...grill that sucker.

As an alternative to the light marinade suggested above (which I would go with as my first option) perhaps also consider a terryaki (did I spell that right?) and ginger marinade. Sometimes I prefer that to an oil based marinade for fish, as fish seems to get somewhat oily on its own.

Thanks everyone! Now, like I said, I really don't know how to cook this, so do I split it open and grill it flat, or do I leave it as-is and grill it "whole"? How long do you think it should cook?

I would leave it whole and grill it as is. Make sure your grill is good and clean, and rub oil on it right before you place the fish on. Have your fish seasoned the way you want it and place it on the grill. I would probably grill the 1st side 10 -15 mins, without disturbing it, unless it is burning - keep an eye on it. I would then turn turn it over and go another 10 -15 mins.

Easy sauce for serving: mayo, drained capers & chopped dill. Make early in the a.m. so the flavors can meld by dinner time. Yum!

What kind of a grill, real coal or gas. If the former you will have to watch it carefully if you put it on whole, try indirect heat. Build a fire on one side and cook it initally on the other. Truthfully, Im a gas grill girl, I like to control the heat more easily. As a alternative you could slice it first in 2 inch steaks, then apply marinade.
