We used Discover at Shipwreck Landings. Found that Amex was not widely accepted

Ha ha, she asked me too, Rosi. I told her "Get thee to the VIOL Forum!"
Anyhow, I don't have Discover, but it seemed to me that I didn't see many places at all that took anything besides Visa and Mastercard.
I used to have a friend here on the mainland that only had a Discover card and it was the biggest PITA over here that I can't imagine everyone on St. John taking it. No one seems to take Discover.

We were on island in May. Use discover almost exclusively in US. It was accepted no where on island that we visited. It wasn't a problem because we had MC and Visa too. But be prepared!

I tried to use mine most everywhere in August and no one took it. I just used another card but I wanted the cash back bonus. I would not even bother trying.

I don't know about Discover but I would disagree about Amex. Sure it wasn't accepted everywhere, but I was surprised how many places I was able to use it. It got a good workout!
I know I used it at Starfish, RI Patton, Conrad Suttons, Pine Peace, Big Planet, Zozos, Jolly Dog, Lilly's, Gallows, etc.

We accept the Discover Card at St. John Spice and I have a card myself.
Every time this issue is raised on a forum I try to find a list of businesses that accept the card on St. John.
I go to the web site. Nothing there. I call the 800 number where I wait on hold for half an hour for three or four different people to transfer me to someone else. The last person usually assures me that the information is available on their web site. It isn't.
I'd say I do this once or year or so. I have no idea why, except to say that I just keep expecting them to get it together.
Every once in a while, a Sales Rep for the company comes by trying to sign me up to accept the Discover Card. I state that I already do accept the card and that if they don't know who takes it, how do they expect their customers to know? I try to explain that a lot more people would use their card if they could make this information available. They always promise to look into it. I never see them or hear from them again.
It's just the dumbest thing!

I ran a multi-store retail business for many years. I found amex & discoverer to have many policies that were not competitive with visa/mc, especially for a small business. Some of those policies are still in effect and generally I don't think it prudent for small businesses to accept them. I think any CPA that looked over the economics of the terms would agree. I remember a terrific restaurant in DC that had a statement at the bottom of the menu that stated:
Visa,Mastercard and American Express accepted, Visa/MC preferred. Now, all that stated,as a consumer I use Amex whenever I can.

Right on, JT. I ask everywhere if they take Amex. How else am I gonna be able to get enough FF miles to get back to STJ?
I almost feel bad, but on the purchasing side I love it.
