Water Island campground makes NYC paper

November 6, 2007 -- WANT to steal away to a private island on the sly this winter? All you need is a c-note.
That's no misprint.
In one of the new Virgin Islands Campground's canvas cottages, tucked away on quiet Water Island, you can do the Caribbean as it was meant to be done - for pennies.
Far from the cruise-ship crowds and the bustle of Charlotte Amalie (but just a $5, 7- minute ferry ride from Crown Bay Marina), the campground features wind-powered, wooden cottages that lay low metaphorically and literally amid the lush green foliage.
Even using the word camping seems deceptive, though. After all, you get a bed, linens, towels, electricity, a cooler and bathhouse privileges, all just a few minutes' walk from Water Island's well-known Honeymoon Beach.
Rates really do start at $100, but they do go up to $135 a night in December. (virginislandscampground.com).
