Trying to figure out where all the funds are going to be for this upcoming trip and trying to decide where I need to pay cash. Anyone care to assist? I know I can go to an ATM but still need to determine how much to put where before I go

CASH
taxis - land and water
general tipping $$
Trunk Bay
Gas stations?? Yes or no on this, I forget.
JVD ferry - yes?
Where else?

I know that E & C Gas takes credit cards. I always like to have enough for drinks here and there, and always fotr waitstaff and var tipping. Maybe it was my years in the food biz, but I hate leaving a CC tip.

I think this will help. Most places took credit cards; I was surprised.
taxis - land and water -- every taxi I took only took cash
general tipping $$ -
Trunk Bay - It's $4 for a day or $10 for a week if you plan to go there more than once (we didn't because of the cruise ship schedule and the fact that there are 33 beaches to choose from)
Gas stations?? The gas station near Cruz Bay takes credit cards now
JVD ferry - The Jost ferry through Inter-island $50 does take credit cards
Baked in The Sun was a cash-only operation, which surprised me, but like I said most places take plastic. (Although many people use cash for ease to split checks and such.)

Thanks. Are there other restaurants that are cash only establishments? I guess Skinny's was at one time but no longer, right? I think I'm ok with what I'm planning to take - thanks for the tips!

I don't recall the details of who took what but I can tell you...
DON'T RELY ON THE ATM'S!!!
The day hubby and I were headed back home we needed cash for the ferry to STT. Not one ATM on the island had cash in it. Not one. It was very very frustrating.
Have a stash o' cash on hand just in case.

Thanks Lysa, I've heard this before so I'm trying to prepare

We always try to take a certain amount at the beginning of the trip and stash it for "last minute" expenditures!

That is true. There was only one time during our daily trips to Starfish that the ATM at Marketplace had money in it, but there were others on island.
Skinny's does take credit cards, but if you have a group they may get aggravated if some pay with cash and some with credit.

When we went to Skinny Legs they took credit cards, but the waitress asked us (and reminded us a couple of times) to leave her tip in cash.
I figured that St.John Car Rental was the only place on island that would take American Express, but Starfish Market and Chelsea Drugstore did also.
Cash for taxis, ferries, and some of the roadside food vendors.
We ended up using less than half of the cash we took, but we didn't eat out all that much either.

If you're planning any day trips, you may want to check their websites in advance (even if you book on island). I know Captain Phil does not take credit cards - cash, check or traveler's checks.
Not sure if Caps takes cc; but at $1 a beer, cash is quicker.
I can't think of any restaurant or shop (in Cruz Bay anyway) that didn't take credit cards. We use the cc as much as possible to build the miles for the next trip.
enjoy,

Unless Quiet Mon has changed, they do not take CC's
I just tell people to have cash to tip and buy drinks.
For food at restaurants and markets use CC....also for car rentals........but I just prefer cash.......travelers checks are the same as cash still right?

I forgot about Quiet Mon, but it does not take anything but cash. You HAVE to have some money for your strawberry blackouts!

I still haven't made it there

so I didn't know that. Although now that I think about it, I was told that at some point.
