Wondering how the car barge worked out, would you do it again? Looking forward to your reports. Lurker Laurie

We find the car barge to be quite easy. Here is the process:

1. Get In Line: You show up and get in line. Most times there was not a line or the line was only a couple of cars when we got to the barge dock.

2. Backing On: When its your turn to get on just do a U-turn and back on. When you first arrive the cars ahead of you may already be ready to back on, in that case just get in line the same way.

3. Follow Directions: Follow the hand directions of the guys directing you onto the barge as to which side to back into, how much to shooch over and how close to get to the car in back of you.

4. Enjoy the Ride: If its a nice day and the barge has seating areas then you can get out of your vehicle and sit in those areas. You can bring drinks with you and some barges have a little bar to buy drinks. We always mix Rum & Cokes.

If there is no seating area on the barge you can stand by the sides and take in the views.

5. Paying: While on the ride over someone will come around to the cars to collect payment. Or if you are sitting in the seating area they will track you down there. You'll have the choice of a one-way or round trip at this point. We always go one-way to give us flexibilty as to which barge company to take back.

6. Getting Off: Once you arrive they will lower the gate. Sometimes they will direct who should get off first or it will obvious as to who's turn it is to roll off.

Most of all, Be Happy and Don't Worry.

From high atop Contant Point.

B&A, good tips.

Laurie, I would do it again. We had to learn certain behaviors. There were not a lot of cars waiting and it was pissing raing when we got there and no one was directing traffic. We just pulled and lined up with the folks that were already there. 10 minutes later the barge showed up and we backed on.

Cheers, RickG

We had a bad experience last time with the car barge.

We were already on, out of cars and what backs onto the barge? A garbage truck!! It was horrible all the way over.

Is there another car barge to avoid those kinds of trucks coming on?

It wasn't funny at the time, but it is now...just wouldn't want to do it again.

We always use the car barge and have never had an issue. I was told, however, that you should wait in your car until the woman comes to take your money, not make her come look for you in the seating area :D

Hey Connie

Sorry, they all use the same ferry - concrete trucks, 40' containers, garbage trucks etc

Thankyou for all your input, booked the jeep on STT and will try the barge this time. I just know I will not be the one backing the jeep on! Laurie

We had an awful experience in August with the car barge. One had broke down so they were cramming us all on to one barge. It was so scarey we were within inches of other cars. No one would even open their doors to get out. I took pics because I was amazed how they crammed us on like sardines. I am just thankful nothing happened and we didnt have to quickly evacuate our vehicles. I hope this is not a common thing.
