I have been checking flight prices for our honeymoon in April 2008 and it looks like it's about $170 cheaper per person to fly into SJU instead of STT. I am confused though on how we get from SJU to St. Thomas? We are renting a villa on St. John so we wouldn't actually have to go to St. Thomas but I assumed no ferries or anything went straight to St. John from SJU. I actually didn't know if any ferries went from SJU to the USVI period.

The only thing I could think of was booking ANOTHER plane ticket from SJU to STT, which is $213 per person and therefore I wouldn't save any money and would be spending more time for nothing. Any ideas? I'm kind of clueless. Thanks so much!

I think people usually connect through San Juan on American Flights. AA flights have been running VERY inexpensive lately, so you might want to check them.

I think there is a ferry that runs only in high season, but I could be remembering something from the far old dusty corners of my mind!

To get to St. John you have to fly into St. Thomas and then take a taxi and then a ferry over to St. John. San Juan only gets you part way there. If you fly American you'll change planes there and take an American Eagle flight to STT.

I don't think the ferry is going this time of year, because I also noticed it's much cheaper to fly into SJU. Even when the ferry does run, it only runs once every two weeks or so (according to a guidebook I read, haven't done it myself) and it costs around $100 plus travel time, so I'm not sure if you'd really save that way anyhow.

Your best bet is to take the plane to STT and the ferry to STJ.

(Someday, just to say I've done it and not because it's any better, I'm going to fly into SJU and take the ferry. I think it'd be a nice trip.)

We've flown through San Juan twice and both times it flew on to STT or from STT to San Juan then stateside.

It's usually a puddle jumper that you take from San Juan to STT and a VERY short flight.

You're right about sometimes finding some pretty cheap fares to San Juan. Next time we try that option, we will consider a new service from Seaborne Airlines that includes flight and ferry to St. John for under $200 round trip. The only catch is that you need to take a taxi from the airport in San Juan down to Old San Juan where the seaplane port is. The ride isn't very far and I'm sure the taxi fares are more reasonable than on STT. Check it out -
