Okay, I have been starting to look and see what new restaurants we should hit when we return next month. I was looking on Ruth's site (to see what restaurants will be open during the 3rd week in Oct) and noticed this restaurant. Their website makes this place look beautiful and I don't think I even know where it is? Is this place worth going to? Also I think this time round we'll give Rhumblines a shot. Any other recommendations for somewhere new? Mainly for dinner -
Places we've been to:
Beach Bar, The Balcony, La Tapa, Morgan Mango's, Zozo's, High Tide (formerly Rumbalaya), Skinny Leg's (drinks only), Woody's (drinks only), Margarita Phil's, Caneel's 3 restaurants
Also any recommendations for Breakfast besides JJ's? We'll be staying at the Westin for 5 and then Caneel for 3 nights.

Tamarind Court for Breakfast. Hercules has great pate and johnny cake too. In Coral Bay, Caspar at Mosquito Bites will make pretty much anything you want - good home fries.

Susan, Compass Rose is the restaurant at Pastory Gardens--the mini golf course. It's on Centerline Road, not too far out of Cruz Bay. I've never eaten there, so can't comment on the food. It's one of those places we keep thinking we are going to get to but then we run out of time.
What about Stone Terrace for dinner? They have an incredible tuna dish that is served with a vanilla corn risotto and fried hearts of palm.
At Rhumblines, John and I really liked the shrimp appetizers.
For breakfast, have you tried Deli Grotto? They have pastries and egg sandwiches and things like that.

Compass rose was good the couple of times I was there. They used to have a deal if you were there for sunset you got a free drink don't know if that is still the case.

I ate at Compass Rose 2x's this summer. I thought it was good both times. After you turn into the property follow the dirt road to the left to a large dirt lot.. The outside looks rough. there's this weird black netting up around the entrance. Its an open air place under a large pavilion. It has nice sunset views and a large round bar in the center. I sat at the bar one additonal time to use the free Wi Fi There were alot of local people having dinner at the bar, everyone seemed to know each other.
Stick to simple entrees, the Fish & Chips, salads, pasta and the pizza were good.
Prices are very reasonable. We had dinner and drinks for 5 and the bill came to 150 bucks.

Look for the new restaurant that will be in Paninni Beach's place by the ferry dock (Wharfside). I don't know when that one will be opening.
I see that you didn't list Cafe Roma. That's one of our favorites for great food (love their pizza among other yummy things on their menu).
If you get out to Coral Bay don't miss Aqua Bistro in the Cocolobo Plaza. It's a small place that you could easily overlook but believe me their meals are delish!!

We also like Island Blues but Aqua Bistro is our fav on that side of the island.

Like Liamsaunt, we also had a wonderful dinner at Stone Terrace. For an inexpensive authentic West Indian food, try Sogos in Cruz Bay. Little place, no atmosphere, but great inexpensive food. Very nice lady from Dominica that runs it. Also had nice tropical juices.
In Coral Bay, we always enjoy meals at Shipwreck. I love the casual atmosphere and have had very good fish there, and wonderful homemade key lime pie for dessert.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I will definitely have to check them all out. Stone Terrace is one of the restaurants I always wanted to try, however they are closed the week we are there. They are reopening on Oct. 19th and we leave the 20th so not sure if we'll get a chance. Another one that is always closed when we go is the Fish Trap. All well.
Thanks again!!

We went to Compass Rose for the first time last month. We were very happy with our experience. It is stuck back on Centerline and it is a little weird going into it. The inside bar area with tables around the edge is very pretty. We were set out on the deck with a table right by the rail. It was already dark out, but you could see the lights everywhere and eating out on the deck gave us a very good breeze! We were out there with only one other couple. Our food was delicious. Hubby had fish and chips. I had a steak that was cooked perfectly and so tender and flavorful. I wondered what I was getting into ordering a steak and it was great! We both started with corn chowder that was good too. We will definitely head back to this place. The service wasn't terribly good, but they did have a few large birthday parties that evening.
As the previous poster said, I highly recommend Cafe Roma also. We love going there. We ate in the restaurant one evening and carried out the other on this last trip. The meals are huge and the ingredients seem so fresh to me. Deli Grotto has a couple of great breakfast dishes like breakfast burritos and scrambles. Baked in the Sun is our morning stop for a breakfast sandwich or bagel, pastry on most mornings though!

Susan, I just realized we are on island at the same time! We are planning on Stone Terrace on the 19th, maybe we'll see you there.

Or else maybe we'll see you at the airport on the 20th.
There are a lot of places closed when we are there, aren't there? I know some folks mentioned Cafe Roma, but that's definitely closed. Some places on my list for this trip are La Tapa, Mojos at Night, Ocean Grill, and Sogos. Also, I plan to try Candies BBQ. I don't think ANYTHING is open in Coral Bay for our trip dates.

I think Compass Rose is great. Don't be put off when you first get there - it is a little rough looking until you walk in. Beautiful bar area, amazing views at sunset, and I have had very good food each time. They also make some really great specialty drinks.

Susan, here's the review of Compass Rose I wrote after our trip last year:
Got there in time for sunset, and were seated out on the deck section, where there’s no railing, only netting. I’m sure that makes the view better, but my chair was about six inches away from about a twenty-foot drop. Anyway, let’s talk about the food. Gary and Pam each got burgers, which they both said were good. Jeannie got nachos, also good. I got fish and chips, which I’d hoped would be good since it was mahi. Nuh-uh. Very ordinary. But it’s fish and chips, not a gourmet meal, so it was okay. The view of the sunset was great, and the lights on St. Thomas became a recurring theme for several meals during our trip. The bill for the four of us, with 1 appetizer and 1 drink, was $62.50. Budget friendly.
Hope this helps...

I love Pastory Gardens for a casual night out. One of my favorite dishes there, which I've had many times, is their Thai Peanut Chicken Salad. Yum; yum. They usually also have a fresh fish special of the day which I've had a couple times; both times very good.
We also often will just stop for drinks & appetizers on the way home & I love their crab & artichoke dip. It's almost always comfortably breezy.
BTW the funny looking net around the circular area of weeds that everyone is mentioning was originally planned to be a butterfly farm but somehow the 'soon come' hasn't yet materialized.
Finally, someone had mentioned a favorite dish at Rhumb Lines and I have to add another favorite menu item of ours there. I believe it's either under their appetizers or their puupuu dishes: it's tempura-like lobster nuggets served with 3 different fantastic sauces. Oh my gosh--my mouth is watering even now. Everytime we go there, we order it, then order another one, then say to each other "why didn't we just order like 6 of these right off the bat?"

There was construction fencing around Rhumblines in July and Augsut, but it looked open, anyone have info?
