Hello all,
We're heading down in a little less than a month (!)and was wondering if anyone could give me their two cents on the restaurants at Caneel for a "nice" dinner. I'd like to go to a nicer place for our anniversary and realize a lot are closed this time of year, so pickings are slim...(so sad La Tapa will be closed). Of all of the times I've been to STJ, I've never stepped foot on Caneel's property so don't know much about it.
ANy input is appreciated! :)

Turtle Bay Estate House is only open to folks staying at Caneel. So, your "nice" option is the Equator. In my opinion, it's only OK. Of the places that are open, I would choose Asolare for your "nice" meal.

We've always liked Asolare (not at Caneel) -- although for some folks this has been hit or miss.

we also went to Asolare last year and really enjoyed it. Trying Stone Terrace this year as well.

Asolare reminds me of a Hemingway novel for some reason. Love the decor and the view. Nice breezes. Ask for a table on the deck (as long as it's nice!). Liek I said we've always had nice dinners there-- not cheap though.

For cost purposes we try to keep it to one big night out for the week we go away, and the rest of the time cook dinner at "home."

Last time it was La Tapa (to die for), and next time it will be Asolare, since those seem to be the 2 most talked-about/recommended.

I'd be the one Gromit is referring to who didn't LOVE Asolare. Didn't hate it but didn't LOVE it. Loved the atmosphere. Food was fine. Service was a bit stuffy. But this was YEARS ago ... 2001 I think.

Another option that I am going to check out is Zozo's. I've seen such favorable reviews of the food and the location that I have to check it out!

There's a poll going on right now about this very subject...

Click on "View Results" if you're not voting.

I'm not sure which of the restaurants will be open in September, but this list is a good place to start.

As you can see from the voting results, Caneel isn't going very well. ZoZo's and Stone Terrace seem to be favored by far.

LOVE ZoZo's but it is closed when we are there, as is my fave La Tapa. :(
Knowing us we'll hit happy hour every day and end up at the Beach Bar. We always have good intentions until the drinks get involved... :)

We always have the anniversary dinner at Asolare. We love it. There is one annoying waitress but that is it. We only had her once. Everything else has been great. We almost went to Zozos this year. We ended up having a drink there and then going to Asolare.

We've always enjoyed our last night at Asolare.

Reserve a table at the rail and go for sunset.

Stone Terrace is also very good.
