So I went to the liquor store tonight in search of Coconut Cream/Cream of Coconut...they didn't have it. And this was a pretty big liquor store.

The guy working there asked me what it was for and I said that it was for a Painkiller...so he looked it up in his drink book...said there was only a "Pain in the A$$" and a "Paintball"...I laughed and said that wasn't what I was looking for...

So then the lady working there looked it up online and found some site, which she read off...it said "Painkiller...I've only had this on St. John in the US Virgin Islands and every where else I've mentioned it nobody had a clue what I was talking about."

Yep.

So what's a girl to do? I know that I can use coconut rum instead, but I prefer the fattening version of the drink.

So where do y'all buy this elusive ingredient? Am I going to have to wait until my next trip to STJ to get coconut cream? We just went in June, so 10 months is a long time to wait for a homemade Painkiller!

We use Coco Lopez in Painkillers...we also use it in
Piña Coladas. It is carried by our local supermarket and I believe Asian markets have it too. Good luck.

Go to your local grocery store and go into the isle where they have the mexican foods. You should find the Coco Lopez cans in there. Make sure you shake the stuff REALLY good before you open it

Instead of the Coco Lopez, we use the Coconut Snow, which we purchased on-line from Liquorama. (This stuff was recommended by CA Girl.) So, it's just coconut cream in a powdered form and we really like it. You don't have to use a whole of it and it doesn't make the drink quite as heavy and it's just easier to deal with. Two thumbs up for us. Ali~

I found it at my local grocery store, but had to ask where it was kept! I think is was the Mexican Food Section as another poster mentioned.

when you get your can of coco lopez, it'll likely be in a semi-solid form. if you put it in a bowl in the microwave, or simmer in a pot on the stove, it'll melt down and you'll be ready to go!

Coco Real makes coconut cream that comes is a squeezeable plastic container. It's handier to store than the partially used cans of CoCo Lopez. I found CoCo Real at the grocery store as well.

Thanks for the information....CoCo Real. We usually end up throwing away the leftover CoCo Lopez if we leave it in the can and forget to put it in a plastic container. Do you happen to know if CoCo Real is sold on St. John?

I just bought two of the CoCo Real squeeze bottles at Krogers this morning. It is in the drink mix aisle. They were $3.29 each.

Putting this stuff in a plastic squeeze bottle is the next best thing since sliced bread!!

Hi Mia - I've never seen it on St. John, but it is fairly new I think - I just started seeing it here. Another benefit I forgot to mention - no refrigeration required; it squeezes better at room temp.

Regarding coco real, I bought some a while back and posted about it here, thinking I had found something really terrfic. I got multiple feedbacks that the product is not very good--that it is grainy and has a funny off flavor. So, you might want to taste it and make sure you like it before hauling it down to St. John with you.

Practice painkillers - I like it! In fact, maybe I ought to taste-check the CoCo Real I have again - you can't be too careful, can you?

You are so lucky to be able to buy Coco Lopez in your grocery store. In Sweden, nobody doesn't even have a clue what it is. I called the "largest American food store in Sweden" (at least that's what they say in their advertisement), and asked if they had Coco Lopez. The answer I got was "coco WHAT"???

I have to buy it when in the islands or US and take it home with me in my checked luggage.

It's very appreciated here though. My neighbours that get to taste it sometimes, can't stop talking about the great drink Painkiller.

The "hispanic" section of our stores up here carry a GOYA brand cream of coconut that I assume is the same stuff (we use interchangeably). When in Maine a couple of weeks ago, we couldn't find coco lopez, so we experimented with Thai brand coconut milk mixed with sweetened condensed milk which turned out to be pretty tasty.
