Dohm's Water Taxi

Two months ago we cut it pretty close in picking up our rental car in Cruz Bay. The agency closed at 5:00. We got off the plane at 3:45 and off the ferry at 4:50. I was panicking because my calls were getting dropped as I tried to call ahead to see how long they'd wait on us. As soon as we docked, I sprinted up the street like a wild woman (with rolling suitcase in hand) for 2 blocks - not a pretty site. Hubby and teens came strolling up the street after me in no hurry. Lord, I need to chill!

To make a long story longer....

For some reason, I can't open the watertaxi-vi.com website. Any Dohm's passengers out there? Here's what I think I know from past posts: you are picked up somewhere close to the Charlotte Amalie ferry dock; you are dropped off at the VI National Park building in Cruz Bay; is it $20. per person? We have 4 people in our group. How many people can they accommodate? Do you have to call ahead to have them waiting on you? Did you like your experience? I see that its a catamaran, how much quicker/slower than the ferry? More comfortable?

You can call them at 340.775.6501

You are picked up at the old National Park dock in Red Hook, not downtown and taken to the national park dock on St jOhn.

There is a $100 min. and it takes 10 minutes to cross and leaves as soon as you get loaded.

The boats vary in size from 10 passenger up to about 30 i think. Typically they are doing private trips but you can let them know you are open to others travelling BUT then you may have to wait for them....which kind of defeats the whole purpose imho. You can't just randomly come up with people at the airport either as they need to know in advance if you will have more people. If you have more they have to assign a crew member to the trip to comply with US Coast Guard Regs and that needs to be done ahead.

We used Dohm's for the first time when we went in early August with our kids. We also used Christopher's Taxi service. Combined, it was a seemless, no-hassle way to get from the airport to STJ and back.

Christopher's was waiting for us at the airport. Load bags, off to Red Hook...no waiting for the taxi to fill with others and no stops at resorts in STT along the way. Christopher's is in cell phone/radio contact with Dohm's enroute. Once in Red Hook, Dohm's was waiting for us. Bags go from taxi to boat and we're off. The boat trip across the sound is, tops, 10 minutes...we thought less. So, from airport to STJ was no more than 40 minutes. We experienced the same on the way back.

It is a bit more expensive than the ferry, but it sure is an easy, stress free way to go. Christopher's taxi is comparable in price to the other taxis.

Taking a private taxi and then Dohm's is definitely the way to go!!!!! No fuss, no stress. It's worth all the x-tra pennies it costs you!

Christopher's Taxi is 340-690-1581.

Also, look into the St. John Shuttle as an alternative to Dohm's. They have 2 taxis running back and forth to STT and are a tiny bit cheaper than Dohm's. The two businesses don't really "compete" as they often pass fares along to each other when their respective fleets are booked.

I was in contact with Dohm's via email last (reserving for our trip in 6 months) and Julie told me they are having problems with the site and the tech can't figure out was it wrong.

Thanks to everyone for all the information. It's wonderful to have a website for the inside scoop! I'm already planning this trip and it's still 11 months away
